Chapter 3 - The Secret Surveillance Network and the Midnight Intruder

The revelation hung in the sunlit breakfast room like a thundercloud.

I stared across the table at Julian Corsini, seeing past the pristine bespoke suit, the polished manners, and the terrifying mafia boss reputation into the cold, jagged grief of a man whose sanctuary had been systematically violated.

“Why didn't you call the police?” I asked quietly, my fingers uncurling from my lap.

Julian let out a dry, humorless sound, picking up his coffee cup and setting it back down without drinking.

“The police in Boston don't investigate thefts when the stolen items have no market value, Sadie,” he said smoothly.

“And more importantly, I don't invite men in blue uniforms sniffing around my private life unless I intend to bury them afterward. Corsini House handles its own security.”

“Then how do you plan to catch them?” I asked, a sudden shiver running down my spine.

Julian didn't answer right away.

He reached down beside his chair, picked up a slim black tablet, and slid it across the table toward me.

The screen lit up, displaying a live multi-grid camera feed of every room, hallway, and corridor in the mansion.

“When the first item disappeared, Martin installed twelve hidden lenses across the common areas,” Julian explained calmly.

“By the time the third item vanished, I had upgraded the system to cover every square inch of the interior, including the service quarters and the garage apartment.”

My breath caught.

“Including my apartment?”

Julian’s dark eyes met mine with unblinking candor.

“Especially your apartment.”

Heat rushed back into my cheeks, though this time it wasn't embarrassment—it was a spike of defensive indignation.

“Mr. Corsini, that is a severe violation of privacy! I signed an employment contract, not a consent form to be filmed in my private living quarters!”

“Your employment contract explicitly states that Corsini House reserves the right to monitor all residential spaces for security purposes,” Julian countered smoothly, his voice dropping an octave.

“And considering you spent last night pirouetting in my private drawing room wearing my favorite custom shirt, I’d say the cameras have already proven their immense diagnostic value.”

I opened my mouth to fire back a furious retort about privacy rights, but before I could speak, a sharp, urgent chime interrupted us from the corner of the room.

Julian’s eyes snapped toward a wall-mounted security console near the pantry doors.

A red light was flashing rapidly on Sector Seven—the ground-floor library wing.

“Stay here,” Julian ordered, standing up with sudden, terrifying speed.

He didn't yell, he didn't panic, but in the span of a single heartbeat, the quiet, elegant billionaire vanished, replaced instantly by an apex predator who owned the dark side of Boston.

From his holster beneath his vest, he smoothly pulled a black, suppressed Sig Sauer pistol, checking the chamber with a quiet, practiced click.

“Mr. Corsini—!” I gasped, half-rising from my chair.

“I told you to stay put, Sadie,” he snapped over his shoulder, his dark eyes flashing with lethal intent.

“If anyone enters this kitchen who isn't me, you shoot them. Do you understand?”

Before I could answer, he vanished through the swinging pantry doors into the dark hallway beyond.

The mansion went dead silent.

I stood frozen beside the breakfast table, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Outside the tall windows, the morning mist was rolling in from Boston Harbor, casting long, gray shadows across the pristine lawn.

Then came the sound.

A sharp, muffled crash from the library wing, followed by the deep, resonant echo of a muffled gunshot.
