Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER’S VOW: HEALING, TEARS, AND FACING THE TRUTH IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM

While Richard sat in a holding cell facing the weight of his crimes, I sat beside Maya’s hospital bed, peeling an orange into neat little slices. She was eating slowly, her eyes fixed on the television screen playing a muted morning news program.

"Are they really not letting him out, Mom?" Maya asked softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the IV monitor.

"No, sweetie. The police found enough evidence to keep him and Patricia locked up until the trial," I answered, handing her a slice of orange. "You are never going back to that house, and no one will ever lock you in that room again. I promise you."

Maya let out a shaky breath, a tear slipping down her pale cheek. "I tried to tell you before, Mom. But every time I started to say something, Patricia would look at me across the dinner table and whisper that you had a new life now, and that you wouldn't care if a rebellious kid like me got punished."

My heart shattered all over again. I reached out, cupping her face in my hands and wiping away the tear with my thumb. "I will always care, Maya. Always. I was blind, and I trusted someone I shouldn't have, but that ends today. From now on, it's just you and me against the world."

She leaned into my palm, closing her eyes tightly. "I kept that notebook in my backpack because I was scared that if I didn't write it down, I would start believing their rules were normal. I thought maybe if something happened to me, someone would read it and know the truth."

"You were braver than I ever was," I whispered, pulling her into a gentle hug.

Later that afternoon, the hospital social worker walked in with a folder full of counseling referrals and legal support forms. "Mrs. Evans, the state has fast-tracked a full emergency custody order granting you sole legal and physical custody. Furthermore, the district attorney has requested Maya's statement whenever she feels strong enough, but there's no pressure."

"I want to talk to them," Maya said suddenly, sitting up straight against the pillows with a fierce spark in her dark eyes. "I want to tell the judge everything they did. I'm not scared anymore."
