Chapter 8 - THE PRE-TRIAL DEPOSITIONS: PATRICIA’S BETRAYAL AND THE COLLAPSE OF THE DEFENSE

The sterile conference room on the third floor of the county courthouse smelled of stale coffee and printer toner. Across the long mahogany table sat Richard’s defense attorney, a sharp-suited man named Henderson, looking distinctly uncomfortable as he reviewed the state's newly expanded evidence packets.

Patricia sat at the adjacent table accompanied by her own court-appointed counsel. Her once-polished blonde hair was pulled back into a messy bun, and she wore a plain gray jumpsuit instead of her designer clothes.

The door opened, and the district attorney walked in, laying down certified copies of the bank statements alongside transcripts of the basement audio files.

"Before we proceed to a formal grand jury indictment next week, the state is offering a conditional plea arrangement," the prosecutor announced, his voice echoing off the paneled walls. "Cooperation regarding the financial embezzlement and the structural confinement will be heavily factored into the sentencing recommendations."

Patricia instantly slammed her hand onto the table, her voice shrill and panicked. "I didn't touch the trust fund money! That was all Richard! He set up the accounts, he forced me to keep track of Maya's schedule when he was out of town, and he threatened to throw me out on the street if I questioned him!"

Richard’s defense attorney shot a sharp glare at Patricia. "Mrs. Evans, advised by counsel, you should remain silent—"

"I won't remain silent while he takes the fall for everything!" Patricia screamed, tears of pure rage springing to her eyes. "He was the one who built the hidden door! He was the one who stole her inheritance to pay off his gambling debts in Atlantic City! I just wanted a normal marriage!"

Richard turned his head slowly, staring at his wife with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. "You spent every dime of that stolen money on luxury cars and handbags, Patricia. Don't sit there and play the innocent housewife."

The prosecutor watched the argument unfold with calm detachment, sliding a blank confession form across the table toward Patricia’s attorney. "It looks like your clients' unified front has officially fractured. We'll take our formal statements separately, starting with Mrs. Evans."
