Chapter 2 - The Empire in the Shadows

Victoria Caldwell’s office was a fortress of glass and steel overlooking the city skyline.

When I walked in, the burn on my neck securely bandaged, Victoria immediately stood up.

Her eyes darted to the white gauze, and a cold, silent fury hardened her expression.

"He did this?" she asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

"Over breakfast," I replied, taking a seat in the leather chair across from her desk. "Because I wouldn't fund Brooke's salon."

Victoria shook her head, pulling a massive stack of manila folders toward her.

"He's a fool. An arrogant, short-sighted fool."

She opened the first folder.

"Let’s talk about the audit. Arthur assumes the joint account he’s been draining is tied to your graphic design income."

I nodded. "He thinks I make maybe sixty thousand a year. He thinks the house was bought with a mortgage we share."

"Right," Victoria smirked. "He missed the part where the house is owned entirely by Vanguard Holdings."

Vanguard Holdings.

The shell company my father had set up to protect my assets before he passed away.

My father was a self-made billionaire who ran one of the most successful private equity and lending firms on the East Coast.

He always warned me about men like Arthur.

“Make them fall in love with the girl, Clara. Not the bank.”

I had followed his advice, hiding the extent of my wealth, waiting for Arthur to prove his character.

Instead, he proved my father right.

"The accountant found the trail," Victoria continued, sliding a spreadsheet across the table.

"Over the last twenty-four months, Arthur has transferred approximately four hundred thousand dollars into offshore accounts."

I stared at the numbers, a cold numbness settling over me.

"How?"

"He forged your signature on a series of small business loans, funneling the money through Brooke's LLCs."

Brooke's salon wasn't just a vanity project.

It was a money-laundering front.

"The forty thousand they demanded this morning," Victoria said, tapping her pen on the paper, "was a desperate attempt to cover a margin call. They are drowning in debt."

"So they aren't just greedy," I murmured. "They're desperate."

"Exactly. And as of an hour ago, I executed the contingency plan."

I looked up at her.

"The contingency?"

Victoria smiled, and it was a terrifying thing to see.

"I froze every account bearing his name. I revoked his access to the joint funds. I canceled his credit lines."

I took a deep breath, feeling the bandage stretch against my skin.

"And the house?"

"The property management team from Vanguard Holdings changed the smart locks remotely ten minutes ago."

Arthur and Brooke were out there right now, spending money they no longer had, preparing to return to a home they could no longer enter.

"I also filed the restraining order," Victoria added, sliding a final document toward me. "Given the police report and the medical records, the judge granted an emergency protective order. He cannot come within five hundred feet of you."

I signed the paper, my hand perfectly steady.

For eight years, I had made myself small to make Arthur feel big.

I had dressed modestly, downplayed my intelligence, and endured his condescension just to keep the peace.

I thought I was being a good wife.

I didn't realize I was just playing the perfect victim.

"Where will you stay?" Victoria asked softly.

"The penthouse at the Four Seasons," I replied. "It's time I stopped pretending I'm someone I'm not."

Victoria nodded approvingly.

"Let the games begin."

I walked out of her office, the city below me bustling with life.

My skin still burned, but the pain was no longer a symbol of weakness.

It was the ignition switch for my revenge.
