Chapter 6 - Thieves Falling Out

When the ship sinks, the rats always turn on each other.
Brooke’s betrayal of her brother was faster and more vicious than I could have ever predicted.
With Arthur sitting in a county holding cell unable to post his massive bail, the spotlight of the investigation shifted entirely to Brooke.
The police realized that the fraudulent LLCs used to launder the stolen money were all registered in her name.
She wasn't just a bystander; she was an accessory to grand larceny and wire fraud.
On a rainy Tuesday evening, my phone rang.
It was Brooke.
I answered, putting her on speakerphone while I reviewed quarterly financial reports for Vanguard.
"Clara? Oh my god, Clara, thank god you answered!"
Her voice was high-pitched, manic, and trembling with terror.
Gone was the arrogant woman who had laughed while my skin burned.
"Hello, Brooke," I replied evenly.
"Clara, you have to listen to me! The police are here. They have a warrant for my laptops and my financial records. You have to tell them I didn't know!"
"Didn't know what?" I asked, turning a page in my report.
"That Arthur stole the money! He told me it was his bonus from work! He told me you agreed to fund the salon!"
She was sobbing hysterically now, completely throwing her brother under the bus to save her own skin.
"Brooke," I said calmly. "I saw the text messages you sent him. The ones where you told him to forge my signature because 'the stupid mouse won't notice anyway'."
Silence hung heavily on the line, broken only by her ragged breathing.
"He... he showed you those?"
"The forensic team recovered them," I corrected her. "You knew exactly where the money was coming from."
"Clara, please! I'm family! You can't let them send me to prison! I'll testify against Arthur! I'll tell them everything about how he hit you and emotionally abused you! I'll be your star witness!"
I stopped reading my report and looked out the window at the city lights.
"I don't need a star witness, Brooke. I have the burns on my neck. I have the financial records. And I have Arthur exactly where I want him."
"Please! I have nothing! I'm ruined!"
"You ruined yourself," I said softly. "You laughed while he poured boiling coffee on my face. Did you think I would forget that?"
"I... I was scared of him too!" she lied, her voice cracking.
"No, you weren't. You enjoyed it. You enjoyed feeling superior. Enjoy the consequences, Brooke."
I ended the call and blocked her number.
The next morning, the news broke that Brooke Sterling had been arrested at a cheap motel, attempting to flee the state with a suitcase full of whatever cash she had left.
She immediately signed a plea deal, agreeing to testify against her own brother in exchange for a reduced sentence.

The Sterling family was tearing itself apart, and I didn't even have to lift a finger to push them.
I just had to step back and let their own greed consume them.
