Chapter 5 - THE HYDRAULIC JAILBREAK AND THE COLLAPSING FACADE

The thick steel hinge gave way with a metallic shriek that echoed off the damp concrete walls, followed immediately by the second hinge snapping under the crushing pressure of the hydraulic cutters. Chloe grabbed the heavy wire mesh door and yanked it outward, ripping it completely off its welded frame.
“Don't move, Sarah. Let me help you,” Chloe said softly, dropping her tactical jacket onto the freezing floor and wrapping it gently around my shivering, blood-slicked shoulders.
“The baby, Chloe... it's coming right now,” I gasped, clutching my abdomen as my water broke, spilling onto the cold concrete between my feet.
The two private security operatives exchanged urgent glances. The lead operator, a veteran named Miller who had spent twelve years in military intelligence before moving to private security, knelt beside us with practiced efficiency.
“We don't have time to wait for an ambulance to navigate these suburban side streets, Ms. Vance,” Miller said calmly, his voice steady and grounding. “The baby is crowning. We need to stabilize her right here, secure the perimeter, and prep the extraction vehicle.”
Marcus tried to edge sideways toward the basement stairs, his eyes darting frantically toward the exit. “Look, take whatever you want. Take the car keys, take the cash in the safe upstairs. Just let me walk away. We can settle this quietly—!”
The second security operative, a towering ex-marine named Jax, stepped directly into Marcus’s path, lifting him by the collar of his expensive dress shirt and slamming him effortlessly against the concrete wall.
“You aren't going anywhere, counselor,” Jax growled, pressing Marcus’s face firmly against the cold cinder block. “You stay right here and watch the family values you care so much about.”
Upstairs, the heavy footsteps of dinner guests moving toward the hallway could be clearly heard through the floorboards. Someone had obviously heard the commotion of the door exploding inward and the sound of the metal cutters.
“Marcus? Is everything alright down there?” Judge Harrison’s distinguished voice boomed through the open basement door at the top of the stairs.
Marcus opened his mouth to scream for help, but Jax clamped a heavy hand firmly over his mouth, cutting off his words with a muffled grunt.
Chloe stood up slowly, wiping a smear of blood from her knee, and walked deliberately toward the base of the basement stairs. She looked up at the open doorway where Judge Harrison and Councilman Thomas were peering down into the gloom, flanked by their bewildered wives and Evelyn, who looked like she had just seen a ghost.
“Good evening, gentlemen,” Chloe called out, her voice ringing clear and sharp up the stairwell. “I’m Sarah’s sister, Chloe. I’d suggest you all step back into the dining room unless you want to be named as co-conspirators in a felony kidnapping and torture investigation.”
Judge Harrison blinked in absolute shock, his hand resting on the banister. “What in God’s name is going on here? Where is Sarah?”
Evelyn tried to push past the judge, her face twisted in venomous rage. “That lying tramp staged this! She’s mentally unstable, she locked herself in—!”
“Shut up, Evelyn,” Chloe snapped, stepping halfway up the stairs so she was face-to-face with Marcus’s mother. She reached out and snatched the gold chain right off Evelyn’s neck with a sharp tug, breaking the clasp. She held the heavy brass key up to the light of the overhead bulb. “We found the key. We found the audio logs. And thanks to your wonderful son, we have high-definition footage of a federal embezzlement scheme and domestic torture streaming directly to three separate investigative news desks in Chicago.”
Councilman Thomas stepped back, his face turning pale as he realized the political fallout of being associated with Marcus Vance. “Marcus... what is the meaning of this?”

Before Marcus could answer from the bottom of the stairs, a sharp, piercing cry echoed through the damp basement air—a sound that cut through the tension like a blade.
My baby had arrived.
