Chapter 8 - THE BAIL HEARING AND THE HIDDEN ACCOMPLICE

The courtroom of the county municipal building was packed to capacity. Reporters from local and national news outlets sat shoulder-to-shoulder in the wooden gallery, their cameras and notebooks poised to capture every detail of the high-profile case that had taken the state by storm. State v. Marcus Vance had officially become the top headline across every major news network.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Chloe and two armed security operatives from Miller’s team. Though I was still recovering, the sheer determination to see justice carried out kept me upright and resolute. Across the aisle, Marcus sat at the defense table dressed in an orange jumpsuit, looking significantly smaller and more desperate than the polished corporate lawyer who had terrorized me in the basement. His court-appointed defense attorney was whispering frantically in his ear, frantically flipping through a stack of legal briefs.

Judge Harrison—who had recused himself immediately from the case upon realizing he had been dining with the accused monster—watched from the gallery with a grim, disgraced expression.

The heavy oak side door swung open, and Judge Henderson—a visiting federal magistrate known for his strict, unyielding adherence to the law—strode briskly into the courtroom, taking his seat behind the mahogany bench.

“All rise for the United States District Court,” the bailiff announced loudly.

We all stood, and then reseated ourselves as Judge Henderson adjusted his glasses and looked down at the case files spread across his desk.

“We are here today for a formal bail review hearing in the matter of State versus Marcus Vance,” Judge Henderson announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the vaulted room. “The prosecution has filed a motion to deny bail based on the severity of the charges, including kidnapping, torture, attempted murder, and financial fraud. The defense has countered with a request for standard pre-trial release. Mr. Vance’s counsel, you may proceed.”

Marcus’s defense attorney stood up, smoothing his tie. “Thank you, Your Honor. We contend that Mr. Vance is a lifelong member of the community, a respected legal professional, and poses no flight risk. The allegations made by the plaintiff are sensationalized and lack foundational corroboration—”

“Objection, Your Honor,” interrupted Assistant District Attorney Miller—a sharp prosecutor who had taken over the case following Agent Vance’s briefing. He walked to the center of the well, holding a flash drive. “The prosecution requests permission to enter Exhibit G into the court record—a decrypted audio-visual log recovered from the defendant’s private server yesterday afternoon.”

Judge Henderson nodded. “Granted. Play the file.”

The courtroom’s overhead projector flickered to life, casting a bright, clear video onto the large screen behind the judge’s bench. The footage showed Marcus sitting in his home office late at night, speaking on an encrypted VoIP call with an unknown individual whose voice and face had been digitally scrambled.

“If the police or my wife’s sister catch wind of the offshore accounts, liquidate the Cayman holdings immediately and transfer the funds to the secondary shell corporation in Panama,” Marcus’s voice on the video commanded clearly. “And if Evelyn calls, tell her to secure the secondary safe house in rural Indiana. We need a backup plan if the suburban property gets compromised.”

A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery.

Marcus slammed his hands down on the defense table in the courtroom, his face turning crimson as he shouted across the room, “That’s a fabricated deepfake! That video was doctored by my wife’s family to steal my estate!”

Judge Henderson banged his gavel once with a resounding crack that instantly silenced the courtroom. “Silence, Mr. Vance! Another outburst like that and you will be held in direct contempt of court.”

The magistrate leaned forward, resting his forearms on the bench and staring down coldly at Marcus. “The court has reviewed the complete forensic data packet submitted by state investigators, including the unassailable digital metadata matching your voice signature, IP address, and private encryption keys. Furthermore, the mention of a secondary safe house in rural Indiana confirms that you not only possess the means and motive to flee, but you also have active, unapprehended accomplices assisting you.”

Marcus slumped back into his chair, his defense attorney rubbing his temples in utter defeat.

“Motion for bail is formally denied,” Judge Henderson declared, his voice ringing with finality. “The defendant shall be remanded to federal custody without the possibility of bail pending trial. Court is adjourned.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Marcus out of the courtroom, he turned his head and shot me one final, venomous glare across the room—a look that promised retribution even from behind bars. But I didn't flinch. I held my head high, knowing that the secret safe house in Indiana was now on federal radar, and Marcus’s web of lies was finally collapsing in upon itself.
