Chapter 7 - The Midnight Intruder and the Hidden Safe in the Study

The sharp sound of breaking glass reverberated up through the open stairwells of Weston Manor, shattering the heavy silence of the coastal estate.

Graham’s expression hardened instantly from a tired, brooding survivor into a razor-sharp apex predator ready to defend his territory.

"Stay inside this suite, Emily," Graham commanded in a low, urgent whisper, his hand sliding into his inner coat pocket to grip a concealed security device.

"Not a chance," Emily shot back immediately, refusing to cower behind a locked door while danger echoed through the halls below. "If Victor's men are here, we are in this together."

Before Graham could argue further, heavy footsteps pounded furiously up the grand staircase, accompanied by the panicked voice of Arthur the butler.

"Mr. Weston! Sir, you need to come down immediately!" Arthur shouted, his usual polished composure completely shattered as he burst into the upper hallway.

Graham stepped out of the doorway, his tall frame blocking Emily from the direct line of sight as he confronted the trembling elderly servant.

"Who got past the security perimeter, Arthur?" Graham demanded coldly, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the dim corridor.

"It... it isn't an intruder from the outside, sir," Arthur gasped for breath, clutching his chest. "It's your uncle, Marcus Weston, and two armed private bailiffs."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Marcus Weston—Graham's estranged uncle who had vanished from the company board a decade ago amidst embezzlement rumors.

"Uncle Marcus?" Graham muttered, a dark shadow crossing his face as old family trauma flared hot beneath the surface. "I thought he was locked away in a Swiss sanitarium."

"He was released last month, sir," Arthur explained rapidly. "And he claims he has a proprietary claim to the estate's foundational trusts signed by your late father."

Graham didn't wait to hear another word; he strode past the butler with long, furious strides, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white.

Emily followed closely behind him, her sneakers making silent contact with the plush Persian runner as they descended the grand dual staircase.

The grand foyer below was a scene of chaos. Shards of an antique crystal chandelier lay scattered across the polished marble floor like frozen raindrops.

Standing near the main entrance was a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored velvet smoking jacket, leaning heavily on an ornate gold-headed cane.

Marcus Weston looked up, his pale, sunken eyes—uncannily similar to Graham’s—fixed upon his nephew with a twisted, sadistic smile.

"Well, well, well," Marcus purred, his voice raspy and dripping with decades of bitterness and unmitigated greed. "Look who finally crawled back out of his self-pitying cave."

"You are trespassing on private property, Marcus," Graham stated, his voice a low, vibrating growl that echoed ominously off the stone walls. "Get out before I have you physically removed."

Marcus let out a harsh, barking laugh, tapping his gold cane sharply against the shattered crystal on the floor to punctuate his amusement.

"Private property?" Marcus mocked, stepping forward as the two armed bailiffs flanking him adjusted their heavy tactical vests. "This entire estate, every patent, every cent in the foundation belongs by right of blood to the true heirs—not a broken, unstable boy who let his own company slip through his fingers!"

"You embezzled thirty million dollars from the R&D division twenty years ago and fled the country," Graham fired back, stepping directly into his uncle's personal space. "You have no blood right here. You have a prison record."

Marcus's smile vanished instantly, replaced by a venomous mask of pure hatred as he glared up at his towering nephew.

"Think you're untouchable because you hold the CEO chair?" Marcus hissed softly, leaning in close. "Victor and I already hold the master encryption keys to the primary server vault downstairs."

Emily’s eyes widened as she pieced together the devastating puzzle: Victor wasn't just staging a corporate takeover; he was executing a complete family asset plunder.

"He's stalling," Emily blurted out, stepping around Graham to address the room with sudden, piercing clarity. "They didn't come here to argue law; they sent Marcus as a distraction while someone else raids the underground server room!"

Marcus whipped his head around, his sharp gaze locking onto Emily for the first time with genuine surprise and murderous hostility.

"And who in God's name is this cheap little street rat?" Marcus snarled, pointing his gold cane directly at Emily's chest. "Another one of your pathetic charity cases, Graham?"

Graham didn't waste a single second answering with words; his hand shot out, grabbing Marcus by the velvet lapel of his jacket with terrifying force.

"If you or Victor touch a single file in that server room," Graham whispered, his voice dangerously calm, "I will personally ensure you spend your remaining years in a federal cage."

Before Marcus could summon his guards to retaliate, the alarm klaxon on the security wall panel began to wail a piercing, deafening shriek.

Red emergency strobe lights flashed across the grand foyer, signaling a direct security breach in the subterranean laboratory vault.

Graham shoved his uncle back onto the marble floor with enough force to send him stumbling into his armed bailiffs.

"Arthur, lock down the manor!" Graham commanded loudly, grabbing Emily by the hand as he sprinted toward the private study behind the library. "We are going down to stop a theft."
