Chapter 10 - The Return to Cascade and the Unveiling of a New Era

The helicopter bearing the Croft Industries insignia touched down on the central communal green of the Cascade Pack territory just as the morning sun reached its zenith.

The entire pack had gathered—hundreds of wolves standing in uneasy silence, whispering among themselves, staring up at the sleek black aircraft with a mixture of awe and sheer terror.

They had heard the rumors by dawn.

Councilman Miller had fled the territory before breakfast, packing his bags in a panicked rush after realizing his political career had been obliterated.

My father, Richard Hayes, was currently locked in his study, having suffered a spectacular nervous breakdown upon discovering that his offshore accounts had been frozen and his title had been legally transferred to a corporate receivership board.

When the helicopter door opened and I stepped out onto the grass, followed closely by Gideon Locke and Kane Croft himself, the murmurs died instantly.

The pack held its collective breath.

They expected the Monster of Croft Estate to step out with claws bared, ready to claim our lands, evict our families, and assert brutal dominance over a broken community.

Instead, Kane stepped down smoothly, his massive frame radiating controlled power, and stood two paces behind me as I walked forward to address my people.

My sister Chloe was standing near the front of the crowd, her eyes wide with tears, clutching a bundled jacket as she stared at me as if I were a ghost who had returned from the dead.

I stopped in the center of the communal green, took a deep breath of the familiar pine-scented mountain air, and raised my voice so it carried clearly across the silent gathering.

“Listen to me!” I called out, my voice ringing with a sharp, unshakeable authority that demanded attention.

“For five years, you’ve watched our pack slide toward the edge of a cliff. You’ve watched leaders gamble with your homes, your futures, and your dignity. That ends today.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

“The three-million-dollar debt has been restructured,” I announced, lifting my chin.

“Richard Hayes has been permanently stripped of his Alpha status. The pack council has been dissolved, and effective immediately, Cascade operates under a direct corporate protection charter managed by Croft Industries.”

Panic flared in the eyes of several older pack members who remembered the brutal corporate takeovers of the past.

“Does that mean we’re homeless?!” shouted a voice from the back.

“No!” I answered instantly, cutting the panic off at the knees.

“It means your homes are safe. Your clinic is funded. Your logging rights are restored under legal environmental permits, and every single dollar my father hid away is being clawed back to rebuild our infrastructure.”

I turned my head slightly, looking back at Kane.

He stood motionless, his arms crossed over his chest, his golden eyes watching me with a look of profound, unwavering pride.

Then I turned back to the crowd.

“And as for who runs the pack moving forward,” I continued, a fierce smile curving my lips, “we’re going to do things differently. We’re going to balance our own ledgers. We’re going to hold our leaders accountable. And we are never, ever going to let another man trade our lives away in the dark.”

For three seconds, there was absolute silence.

Then Chloe dropped her jacket, started clapping, and within moments, the entire communal green erupted into a deafening roar of cheers, applause, and howling relief.

Elderly wolves who had lived in fear of eviction for years openly wept.

Families embraced.

And as I stood there in the center of my pack, watching the nightmare of my past dissolve into the sunlight of a brand new day, I knew my life would never be the same again.

I hadn't just survived the night with the Alpha King.
