Chapter 10 - Blood Fealty and a New Dawn

Within twenty minutes, forty heavily armed Moretti loyalists had secured every entrance, stairwell, and rooftop of St. Vincent Medical Center.

Emergency medical teams arrived under armed escort, rushing to treat my wounds while the building's emergency generators roared back to life.

I flatly refused anesthesia and pushed the trauma surgeons away until Sophie was safely examined and declared completely unharmed.

"Sit still, you stubborn idiot," Sophie scolded through her tears, pushing a surgeon aside and taking the sterile gauze pads into her own trembling hands.

She gently pressed the dressing against the shrapnel lacerations on my left shoulder, her touch light and agonizingly tender.

"You took a grenade for me, Ethan," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion as she cleaned the blood from my skin.

"You could have died right here on this floor."

I reached up with my uninjured hand, gently cupping the side of her face, uncaring of the doctors and bodyguards standing silently around the room.

"I spent two months dying a slow death every time I walked into an empty penthouse without you," I replied softly, my eyes locked on hers.

"Taking a bullet or a grenade to keep you breathing is the easiest decision I have ever made."

Marcus entered the suite, stepping over the debris with a secure satellite phone and a heavy leather briefcase.

"The cleanup is complete, Boss," Marcus reported in a low, respectful tone.

"Salerno’s entire syndicate has been dismantled across five precincts, and the police commissioner has classified the hospital incident as a localized terrorist intrusion."

"Dominic’s loyalists have surrendered their weapons."

"The council has unanimously reaffirmed your absolute authority over the family."

I gave a cold, dismissive nod, waving Marcus away from the operational details.

"Bring me the briefcase and prepare the convoy," I said.

"We are leaving this city tonight."

Marcus placed the leather case on the low table and withdrew quietly, shutting the door to give us privacy.

I unlocked the brass clasps of the case, pulling out a thick manila envelope and a set of antique brass keys.

I placed them gently in Sophie’s lap.

"What is this, Ethan?" she asked, her eyebrows drawing together in confusion as she looked down at the documents.

"Before everything went wrong, when we were still dreaming about a future away from the shadows, you told me about an orchard estate in the rolling hills of Wisconsin," I explained softly.

"Five hundred acres of private woods, an old stone farmhouse, and a sunlit studio overlooking a quiet lake."

"I bought it three years ago, intending to give it to you for our fifth anniversary."

"The deed, the land titles, and the trust accounts are registered entirely in your maiden name, completely detached from the Moretti syndicate."

"There are no mob ties, no dangerous neighbors, and no armed guards patrolling the fence line."

Sophie stared at the deed, her fingers tracing the embossed seal with wide, disbelieving eyes.

"Why are you giving this to me now?" she breathed out, looking up at me with overwhelming vulnerability.

"Because I want you to have the life you always deserved, Sophie," I said, my voice carrying the absolute weight of my soul.

"I am not giving this to you to buy your forgiveness, and I am not asking you to come back to my dark, violent world."

"You are free."

"If you want to walk away from me tomorrow, take these keys, take the money, and never look back."

"I will protect you from the shadows for the rest of my days, but I will never force you to share my cage again."

The room fell into a profound, suffocating silence, broken only by the distant wail of sirens fading into the cold Chicago night.

Sophie looked down at the brass keys in her lap, then turned her gaze to the bloody bandage covering my shoulder.

Slowly, deliberately, she picked up the keys and slipped them into the pocket of my coat hanging over the chair.

Then she reached out, taking both of my hands into hers, intertwining her fingers with mine.

"I never wanted a life without danger, Ethan," she said, her voice clear, resolute, and stronger than I had ever heard it before.

"I only wanted a life where we faced the danger together."

"I am not running away to an empty farmhouse alone."

"If we are going to rebuild what was broken, we do it side by side, as husband and wife."

"On one condition."

A faint, incredulous breath caught in my throat as hope, fierce and blinding, ignited in my chest.

"Name it," I swore, ready to give her the world.

May you like

Sophie’s dark eyes hardened with a cold, sovereign authority that would make any crime boss proud.

"You take me to that warehouse tonight," she commanded softly.
