Chapter 5 - The Midnight Confession

The neon lights of the waterfront warehouse district cast long, sickly green shadows across the damp asphalt as my armored Mercedes-Benz pulled silently into the loading bay.

Within minutes, the ambush was over before it even truly began.

Vincent Salerno’s men didn't even have time to draw their sidearms before my enforcers dismantled their operation, pinning their leadership against crates of imported whiskey with cold steel pressed against their throats.

I walked slowly through the center of the chaos, my heavy leather boots echoing off the concrete floor, exuding an aura of absolute dominance that made even seasoned enforcers cower.

I grabbed Salerno by the lapels of his expensive silk suit, hauling him off his feet until his toes barely touched the ground.

"You thought I was weak, Vincent?" I whispered, my voice dangerously calm, carrying the weight of a death sentence. "You thought because my personal life hit a rough patch, the Moretti family had lost its teeth?"

"E-Ethan... I swear to God I didn't know—" Salerno choked out, his face turning purple as my grip tightened around his collar.

"If any one of your men comes within three blocks of St. Vincent Medical Center or breathes the same air as my ex-wife again, I won't just take your docks," I hissed right into his ear, releasing him with a shove that sent him sprawling violently onto the crates. "I'll dismantle your entire operation piece by piece and feed your bones to the fishes in Lake Michigan. Am I understood?"

"Yes! Yes, perfectly clear!" Salerno gasped, clutching his throat and scrambling backward into the shadows.

I turned my back on him without another glance, signaling Marcus to pull the vehicles around.

"Back to the hospital," I ordered, slipping back into the leather seat of the car as the driver sped off into the night.

Within twenty minutes, I was back on the top floor of St. Vincent, quietly pushing open the heavy oak door of Sophie's VIP suite.

To my absolute surprise, the room was dimly lit, and Sophie was awake, sitting up against the propped pillows with her dark eyes fixed on the door.

She looked smaller than ever in the soft lamplight, her fingers nervously picking at the edge of the crisp white sheet.

"You shouldn't be out there fighting your family's wars anymore, Ethan," she said softly before I could even take a step toward the bed. "I heard the nurses whispering downstairs about what happened at the docks."

I walked slowly to the bedside, pulling up a leather armchair and sitting down right beside her, resting my elbows on my knees.

"How do you always manage to know what I'm doing, Sophie?" I asked, a dry, self-deprecating smile touching my lips.

"Because I spent five years learning every rhythm of your breathing, every twitch of your jaw, and every lie you tell yourself to keep from falling apart," she replied quietly, her gaze holding mine with heartbreaking intensity. "Why did you come back tonight, Ethan? Why didn't you just let me fade away quietly like I planned?"

I reached out, my large, calloused hand gently closing over her frail fingers, marveling at how fragile she felt compared to the enemies I had just crushed an hour ago.

"Because the moment I saw you sitting in that hallway, Sophie, I realized something terrifying," I confessed, my voice dropping to a raw, honest whisper that I had never shared with another living soul. "I spent our entire marriage trying to protect you from the darkness of my world... without realizing that you were the only light keeping me human in the first place."

Sophie’s eyes glistened with unshed tears, and for the first time in months, a tiny, genuine trace of the woman I fell in love with flickered across her face.

"It hurts so much, Ethan," she whispered, her voice breaking as a single tear finally escaped down her cheek. "I lost our babies... I lost my home... and I thought I lost you forever."

I tightened my grip on her hand, leaning forward until my forehead nearly touched hers, willing every ounce of my strength into her broken body.
