Chapter 5 - The Debt Discovered

The mansion felt different after Mrs. Hargrove was dragged away. The oppressive silence was replaced by a tense, humming energy. Men in dark suits moved quickly through the halls, making hushed, urgent phone calls. The gates were locked down.

Clara sat in the massive kitchen, a cup of untouched tea growing cold between her hands. She was shaking. She had just exposed a traitor in one of Chicago’s most dangerous families. She should be running for her life.

Instead, she was waiting.

Footsteps echoed on the tile. Dominic walked in. He had removed his jacket and tie. He looked exhausted, the weight of his empire and his grief pressing down on his shoulders.

He poured himself a glass of whiskey from a decanter on the counter, drank it in one swallow, and sat across from Clara at the butcher-block island.

“She confessed,” Dominic said, his voice flat and dead. “She was on the payroll of the Moretti family. They wanted my shipping routes. She was riding with Elena that night. She unlocked the doors when the cars blocked them in. During the struggle, Elena tore Mrs. Hargrove's necklace. That’s why Noah was obsessed with the pearl.”

Clara closed her eyes. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Vale.”

“Dominic,” he corrected quietly. He looked at her, truly seeing her for the first time. The cheap clothes, the tired eyes, the fierce, unyielding backbone. “You didn't run away,” he said. “You didn't scream when he hit you. You didn't back down from Hargrove. Who are you, Clara Reed?”

Clara looked down at her hands. “I’m just a maid who needs a paycheck.”

Dominic reached across the table and picked up a piece of paper. Clara’s heart stopped. It was her latest hospital bill for Tyler. It must have fallen out of her pocket during the commotion.

“Tyler Reed,” Dominic read aloud. “Congenital heart defect. Valve replacement required. Past due balance: $85,000. Deposit required for surgery: $5,000.”

Clara snatched the paper back, her cheeks burning with humiliation. “That’s private.”

“You’re working two shifts to pay for a surgery you can never afford on a maid’s salary,” Dominic said, ignoring her anger. “Why didn't you ask me for help?”

“Because I don't beg!” Clara snapped, tears of exhaustion finally spilling over. “And because men like you don't do favors without owning a piece of a person’s soul in return. I just wanted to work. I just wanted to save my brother.”

She put her face in her hands, the dam finally breaking. The stress of the last two years, the fear, the unpaid bills, all of it crashed over her in waves of quiet sobs.

She expected him to yell. She expected him to fire her. Instead, she heard the scrape of a chair. Dominic moved around the island. He didn't touch her, but he stood close, his large presence acting as a shield against the crushing weight of her reality.

“My world took my wife and broke my son,” Dominic said, his voice rough with emotion. “All the money I have couldn't fix him. Eighteen experts failed. You fixed him with a lullaby and a few wooden blocks.”

Clara wiped her eyes, looking up at him.

Dominic pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number. “Dr. Aris,” Dominic said into the phone. “This is Dominic Vale. I’m looking at a file for a Tyler Reed at your cardiac wing. Yes. The deposit? Forget the deposit. Pay the entire balance. Schedule the surgery for tomorrow morning. And Dr. Aris? If anything goes wrong with that boy, I’ll buy your hospital just to fire you. Understood?”

He hung up and placed the phone on the counter.

Clara stared at him, unable to breathe. “You… you didn't have to do that.”

“I didn't do it as a favor, Clara,” Dominic said, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “I did it because you saved my family today. Now, it’s my turn to save yours.”

Before Clara could say another word, a deafening explosion shattered the quiet of the night. The kitchen windows blew inward in a hail of glass. The ground shook. The Morettis knew Hargrove had been caught. And they had come to finish the job.
