Chapter 9 - Rebuilding

Six months later, the Vale mansion looked completely different.

The heavy, suffocating velvet drapes had been replaced with sheer curtains that let the sunlight flood the rooms. The oppressive silence was broken by the sound of laughter, music, and the rapid patter of little feet running across the marble floors.

Dominic had kept his word. He had systematically dismantled his illegal operations, shifting his vast wealth entirely into legitimate real estate and logistics companies. He wanted a clean legacy for Noah, and a safe world for Clara.

Clara stood in the grand foyer, watching as a team of movers carried a brand-new grand piano into the living room. She was dressed in a tailored summer dress, looking radiant and healthy, the dark circles under her eyes long gone.

“A little to the left!” shouted a vibrant, energetic voice.

Tyler, Clara’s ten-year-old brother, bounded down the stairs. His cheeks were rosy, and a small, neat scar peeked out from the collar of his t-shirt—a badge of survival. He had moved into the mansion three months ago, and he had brought an unstoppable energy that had breathed life back into the cold stone walls.

Following closely behind him was Noah. The transformation in the four-year-old was nothing short of miraculous. He no longer hid in closets. He no longer threw things in anger.

“No, Ty! By the window!” Noah argued, grabbing his older surrogate brother’s arm. His voice was clear, loud, and full of life.

“The window has too much glare for sheet music, squirt,” Tyler ruffled Noah’s hair.

Clara smiled, leaning against the doorway. Seeing the two boys bond had healed the final broken pieces of her heart.

Dominic walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. He smelled of fresh air and cedar wood, having spent the morning in the garden rather than a smoke-filled boardroom.

“They’re going to drive each other crazy,” Dominic chuckled, watching the boys argue over the piano placement. “They’re acting like brothers,” Clara said softly, leaning back against his solid chest. “It’s exactly what they both needed.”

Dominic turned her around in his arms, his eyes scanning her face with total adoration. “And what do you need?” he asked, his voice low.

Clara looped her arms around his neck. “I have everything I need right here.”

Dominic smiled, but he reached into the pocket of his slacks. “Not quite everything,” he murmured.

He pulled out a small, velvet box and flipped it open. Inside rested a diamond ring, elegant and breathtaking, flanked by two small, flawless white pearls.

Clara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

“The pearls are a reminder,” Dominic said softly, his eyes locking onto hers. “A reminder of the truth that set us free, and the incredible woman who was brave enough to find it. Clara Reed, you saved my son. You saved me. Will you marry me and make this family official?”

Tears of pure joy spilled down Clara’s cheeks. She didn't have to think. She didn't have to hesitate. “Yes,” she whispered, throwing her arms around him. “Yes, a million times.”

From the living room, a cheer erupted. “Finally!” Tyler yelled, giving Noah a high-five. Noah grinned, running over to wrap his arms around Dominic and Clara’s legs.

“My Clara,” Noah declared happily.

Dominic laughed, lifting Noah into his arms with one hand and holding Clara tight with the other. “That’s right, buddy. Ours forever.”
