Chapter 13 - The Formal Coronation

At two o’clock that afternoon, Judge Beatrice Holloway’s private judicial chambers smelled of old leather books, polished mahogany, and fresh white lilies.

Clara sat in a comfortable wingback armchair, wearing a simple cream dress, holding Violet on her lap.

Arthur Vance stood beside them, holding the official red leather binder containing the expedited adoption decree.

Across the low coffee table sat Detective Nathan Ramos and Dr. Sarah Jenkins, who had come voluntarily to serve as legal witnesses to the historic proceeding.

Judge Holloway entered through her private corridor, having removed her black robes, dressed in a warm woolen cardigan and slacks.

She looked less like an intimidating arbiter of justice and more like a wise, compassionate grandmother welcoming a healing family into her home.

“Good afternoon, Clara.

Hello, Violet,” Judge Holloway said softly, sitting down in the chair opposite them.

Violet sat up straight, pointing proudly to the yellow paper crown resting securely on Clara’s head.

“Look, Judge lady!

I made Mommy a crown because today is our forever day.”

A rare, radiant smile spread across Judge Holloway’s face, softening the stern lines around her eyes.

“That is the most beautiful crown I have ever seen in this courthouse, Violet,” the judge said gently.

Judge Holloway picked up the official pen, opening the red leather binder on the table.

“Before I sign this decree, I need to ask you a question, Violet.”

Violet nodded eagerly, her hands folded neatly over Barnaby the rabbit.

“Do you understand what it means for Clara to become your mother today?”

“It means nobody can ever take me away in a dark car again,” Violet answered, her voice ringing with absolute clarity.

“It means Mommy Clara gets to sign my school permission slips, bake cookies with me on Saturdays, and tuck me in every night.”

Violet looked up at Clara, her hazel eyes glistening with unconditional devotion.

“It means I belong to her, and she belongs to me.”

Judge Holloway wiped a stray tear from the corner of her eye with a fingertip before looking at Clara.

“Clara Linwood, do you take this child as your own, to love, protect, provide for, and cherish as if she were born of your own body?”

“With all my heart, all my soul, and every breath I take for the rest of my life,” Clara said, her voice rich with emotional power.

Judge Holloway brought the gold fountain pen down upon the heavy parchment, signing her name across the decree with sweeping, irreversible strokes.

She pressed the state seal into the hot red wax at the bottom of the document, sealing the bond under the permanent authority of the law.

“By the power vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Minnesota,” Judge Holloway announced, looking up with tears in her eyes, “I declare you, Clara Linwood, to be the legal, permanent, and recognized mother of Violet Linwood.”

Violet squeaked with joy, throwing her arms around Clara’s neck and burying her face into her shoulder.

Detective Ramos wiped his eyes with a handkerchief, while Arthur Vance stood tall, his chest swelling with pride for the woman he had defended so fiercely.

Judge Holloway stood up and walked over, placing a gentle hand on Clara’s shoulder.

“Clara, you walked into my courtroom prepared to walk away with nothing just to protect the child in your womb.”

The judge looked down at Violet, who was beaming with pure, radiant joy.

“Justice does not always work swiftly in this world, but today, justice gave you everything you deserved: your dignity, your safety, and your daughter.”

Clara took the signed decree into her hands, feeling the weight of the paper that had finally broken the chains of her past.

As they prepared to leave the chambers, Clara felt a sudden, sharp tightening across her abdomen that made her gasp softly and grip Arthur’s arm.

Arthur’s eyes widened behind his glasses.

“Clara?

Is it time?”

Clara looked down at her belly, then at Violet, a warm, excited laugh breaking through her surprise.

“I think your little brother just heard the good news, Violet,” Clara gasped with a smile.

“He’s decided he wants to meet his big sister today.”
