Chapter 8 - The Vault In The Woods

Arthur Vance immediately pulled a specialized forensic card reader from his leather briefcase and connected it to his secure laptop on Clara’s dining table.
The dining room was warm, illuminated by the amber chandelier, a stark contrast to the dark secrets emerging on the computer screen.
Violet sat on the velvet armchair by the window, munching quietly on a warm peanut butter sandwich Clara had prepared for her, wrapped in a soft blanket.
As the files populated on Arthur’s screen, the veteran attorney let out a low, stunned whistle that broke the domestic quiet.
“My God, Clara...
This isn't just an architect hiding commercial profits from his pregnant wife.”
Clara walked over to the table, resting both hands on her swollen belly as she peered over Arthur’s shoulder.
The screen displayed hundreds of encrypted PDF records, wire transfer receipts, and high-resolution photographs of private real estate documents.
“What are we looking at, Arthur?” Clara asked, her voice dropping into an anxious whisper.
“Gabriel wasn't just working on commercial urban planning projects,” Arthur explained, his fingers flying across the trackpad.
“He was acting as an intermediary for a network of luxury commercial developments along the North Shore, laundering private equity through shell companies in Belize and the Cayman Islands.”
Arthur pointed at a spreadsheet listing offshore wire transfers totaling over thirty-eight million dollars across a three-year period.
“Look at the transaction dates, Clara.
These transfers began two years ago, right around the time Gabriel insisted that your personal interior design business be dissolved so you could focus on the home.”
A cold, nauseating realization washed over Clara.
Gabriel hadn't wanted her to be a stay-at-home mother out of traditional devotion or paternal care.
He had deliberately isolated her from her professional network, cut off her independent income streams, and made her entirely dependent on his financial crumbs.
He wanted her vulnerable, blind, and unable to afford competent legal representation when he finally chose to spring his divorce trap.
“And look here,” Arthur continued, opening a sub-folder titled Project Timberline.
The folder contained architectural blueprints for a secluded compound built on sixty acres of private land near the Canadian border, registered under Samantha Drake’s maiden name.
The blueprints featured an underground reinforced vault, climate-controlled storage, and high-end security perimeters.
“They weren't planning to move to Zurich, Clara,” Arthur said, turning his laptop toward her.
“They were planning to vanish entirely off the financial grid as soon as the divorce settlement was signed and the assets were legally liquidated into untraceable bearer bonds.”
The front doorbell rang with a crisp, authoritative chime, causing Violet to drop her sandwich onto the plate in terror.
“Don't be frightened, sweetheart,” Clara said instantly, walking over to press a kiss to Violet’s forehead.
“Arthur, please check the door.”
Arthur Vance walked to the entryway, peering through the brass peephole before pulling the door open.
Standing on the porch was Detective Nathan Ramos, accompanied by a woman in a charcoal suit carrying a federal badge.
“Mrs. Linwood, Mr. Vance,” Detective Ramos said, stepping into the foyer.
“This is Special Agent Eleanor Vance from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service.”
Clara’s eyebrows rose slightly in surprise.
“Vance?
Any relation, Arthur?”
“My niece,” Arthur replied with a faint, razor-sharp smile.
“When I saw the carbon ledgers in court this morning, I made a private phone call from the hallway.”
Special Agent Vance entered the dining room, flashing a polite, professional smile before focusing entirely on the computer screen on the dining table.
“Arthur told me you had preliminary evidence of structured offshore wire fraud,” Agent Vance said, slipping on a pair of latex gloves.
“It’s far bigger than structured fraud, Eleanor,” Arthur said, stepping aside to let her inspect the open drive.
“We have the complete mirror backup of Gabriel Linwood and Samantha Drake’s private offshore transaction ledger.”
Agent Vance sat down at the table, her eyes scanning the columns of numbers with practiced intensity.
Within three minutes, her professional demeanor transformed into pure, unvarnished astonishment.
“This matches an ongoing federal investigation into fraudulent municipal bond offerings across three Midwestern states,” Agent Vance said, looking up at Clara.
“Mr. Linwood was using his architectural firm to inflate municipal project valuations, pocketing the excess development grants and shifting them offshore.”
Agent Vance closed the laptop gently and turned to Clara.
“Mrs. Linwood, with your permission, we need to take this drive into federal custody immediately.
This evidence transforms Gabriel Linwood’s case from a state-level divorce dispute into a massive federal indictment.”
Clara looked toward the armchair where Violet was now fast asleep, the worn stuffed rabbit tucked securely under her chin.

“Take it, Agent Vance,” Clara said firmly, her voice steady and resolute.
“Expose every single dollar he tried to steal from my children’s future.”
