Chapter 9 - The Confession In The Shadows

By midnight, the basement interrogation suites of the federal building in downtown Minneapolis were operating under emergency security protocols.

Samantha Drake sat in an iron chair bolted to the floor of Room 4B, her makeup completely ruined by mascara stains and sweat.

Across the steel table sat two federal prosecutors and Special Agent Eleanor Vance, with a digital audio recorder spinning silently between them.

Samantha’s private defense attorney, a high-priced criminal litigator hired by her father, was sitting beside her, his face pale and grim.

“Ms. Drake,” the lead prosecutor began, sliding a printed photograph across the table.

“Do you recognize this property located in Cook County, Minnesota?”

Samantha glanced at the photograph of the secluded northern compound, and her lower lip began to tremble violently.

“I...

I bought that land with my personal inheritance,” Samantha stammered, her voice stripped of every shred of courtroom arrogance.

“Your personal inheritance was depleted four years ago according to your state tax returns, Ms. Drake,” Agent Vance countered mercilessly.

“That property was acquired using three separate wire transfers totaling four point six million dollars, originating from the ‘Violet Linwood Irrevocable Trust.’”

Samantha’s attorney leaned over, whispering furiously into Samantha’s ear, but Samantha pushed him away with sudden, frantic hostility.

“It wasn't my idea!” Samantha shrieked, bursting into tears of self-preservation.

“It was Gabriel!

Gabriel planned the whole thing from the very beginning!”

The federal prosecutor leaned forward, tapping his pen on the legal pad.

“We are listening, Ms. Drake.

On the record.”

Samantha grabbed a plastic cup of water with shaking hands, spilling half of it across the metal table before drinking.

“Gabriel found out that his late wife’s family had set up a contingent audit on Violet’s trust that would trigger automatically on her seventh birthday,” Samantha sobbed.

“Her seventh birthday is next month!

If the trustees conducted the audit, they would discover that Gabriel had already embezzled five million dollars to cover his stock market losses in 2024!”

Agent Vance’s pen moved across her notepad with lethal speed.

“Go on, Ms. Drake.”

“He panicked!” Samantha cried, pointing an accusing finger at the empty air.

“He said the only way to avoid prison was to stage a complete financial collapse, divorce Clara, surrender all his nominal debts to her, and move the remaining cash overseas before the audit triggered!”

“And Violet?” the prosecutor asked, his voice dead and cold.

“Why was a six-year-old child kept locked in a basement cabin for three weeks?”

Samantha pulled at her disheveled hair, her breathing coming in ragged, ugly gasps.

“Gabriel couldn't let Violet attend her regular private school because her teachers were already asking questions about her mother’s trust status!

He told me to take her to the cabin until the divorce papers were signed by Clara!

He said Clara would be so desperate to finalize the divorce before giving birth that she would sign away all rights without asking questions!”

Samantha looked up, her eyes wide with desperate terror.

“I never wanted to lock her in the cellar!

Gabriel called me three nights ago from Minneapolis, furious because Violet had found his second phone!

He ordered me to lock her in the basement room so she couldn't call Clara!

He told me if I didn't help him finish the plan, he would leave me with nothing and pin the embezzlement on my accounting signatures!”

Samantha’s lawyer dropped his pen on the table, shaking his head in silent surrender.

“My client is prepared to enter an immediate, full proffer agreement,” the attorney stated quietly.

“She will provide complete state’s evidence and testify against Gabriel Linwood on all counts of federal wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit child endangerment.”

Agent Vance stood up, her expression completely devoid of sympathy.

“We will take the proffer under consideration, Counselor.

Bailiff, escort Ms. Drake back to the federal detention wing.”

As Samantha was pulled to her feet in iron restraints, screaming for her father, Agent Vance walked into the observation hallway.

Detective Nathan Ramos was waiting outside the two-way mirror, drinking a cup of stale black coffee.

“Did you get it all?” Ramos asked.

“Every single word,” Agent Vance replied, checking her watch.

“Gabriel Linwood thought he was playing a high-stakes game of chess against a vulnerable pregnant woman.”

“Turns out,” Ramos said with a grim chuckle, “he was just digging his own grave under a federal courthouse.”
