Chapter 3 - The Voice From the Grave

“To my dearest mother and my sweet Tanya,” Raymond read, Katherine’s voice seeming to fill the room. “If you are hearing this, it means I am no longer with you. It also means my worst fears have come true.” I squeezed my eyes shut, a fresh wave of tears burning my cheeks.

“For the past six months, I have known about Bradley’s affair with Heather.” A collective gasp echoed from the few remaining family members in the room. Heather shrank back against the kitchen counter, looking desperately for an exit, while Bradley’s face turned an ugly shade of dark crimson. “But infidelity was only the beginning of his betrayal,” the letter continued. “Bradley has been systematically embezzling money from my design firm. He siphoned over half a million dollars to offshore accounts under Heather’s name.”

“That’s a lie!” Bradley shouted, his voice cracking with panic. “She was paranoid! She was crazy!”

“Sit down, Bradley,” Raymond snapped, radiating authority, before looking back at the paper. “I compiled all the bank records, the forged signatures, and the hidden IP addresses. I confronted him two days ago. I told him I was filing for divorce, taking full custody of Tanya, and pressing federal charges. I told him he would get absolutely nothing.”

The reality of the situation crashed over me like a tidal wave. My brave, brilliant daughter hadn't been crumbling under stress; she had been fighting a war inside her own home.

“He threatened me,” Katherine’s letter read. “He told me that if I went to the police, I would never see Tanya again. But I refused to back down. I refused to let him steal my daughter's future. I knew he wouldn't let me walk away alive. He is too greedy, and Heather is too desperate for the lifestyle I built. This letter is my official declaration, witnessed and notarized, to immediately revoke Bradley’s status as a beneficiary. My entire estate, my business, and this house are now placed into an irrevocable trust for Tanya. And my mother, Florence, is granted sole legal and physical custody.”

Bradley shook his head frantically. “No. No, you can’t do that. I’m her father! A letter doesn't trump the law!”

“A letter doesn't,” Raymond agreed softly. “But a confession to murder certainly revokes all parental rights.” He slowly picked up the plastic evidence bag containing the silver USB drive. “Katherine didn't just write a letter, Bradley. She knew a letter wouldn't be enough to put you away. She was a designer. She knew exactly how to install things seamlessly.” He held the drive up for the whole room to see. “She installed a micro-camera in the molding of the staircase."
