Chapter 6 - The Shattered Facade

The arrest was chaotic, loud, and incredibly public. The neighbors, who had previously offered Bradley their deepest sympathies, now stood on their porches in shock as the grieving widower was dragged out of his million-dollar home in cold steel handcuffs. Heather followed shortly after, her mascara running down her face in ugly black streaks, screaming at the officers and claiming she was a victim.

The lead detective, a stern-faced woman who had originally signed off on the "accident" report, apologized to me profusely. “We missed it, Mrs. Florence. I am so deeply sorry,” she said, looking at the USB drive in her gloved hand. “With this evidence, they won't see the light of day for a very long time.” I nodded numbly, clutching the silver bracelet tightly in my palm.

When the police finally left, the large house felt incredibly empty and suffocatingly quiet. The fake friends had scattered the moment the sirens wailed. I went into the backyard and picked up Tanya.

“Where is Daddy going in the police car?” Tanya asked, her big, innocent eyes looking up at me—a question that broke my heart into a million irreparable pieces.

“Daddy made a very bad mistake, sweetheart,” I said softly, stroking her hair. “He has to go away for a long time to think about what he did.”

She rested her head on my shoulder. “Is Mommy coming back now?”

I closed my eyes, letting the tears fall freely. “No, baby. Mommy is in heaven. But she left this just for you.” I gently clasped the silver star bracelet around her tiny ankle, adjusting it to fit.

We spent the next few days packing up Katherine’s essential belongings and moved to my home in Sedona. While packing Katherine’s home office, I found a hidden compartment in her desk containing a small velvet box and a final handwritten note. “Mom. If you are reading this, I’m sorry for the pain you’re going through. I tried to fix it, I tried to survive it. But if I failed, I need you to be strong for my little girl. Teach her to be brave. Teach her to love sunflowers. I love you forever.” Inside the box was a golden pendant shaped like a sunflower. I put it around my neck, promising her right there in the empty room that I would finish the fight she started.
