Chapter 7 - Seeking Justice

The trial began eight months later, just as the brutal Arizona summer started to cool. The media had turned the case into a daily spectacle: the wealthy architect and his glamorous mistress plotting the perfect murder. But they had underestimated the brilliant designer who outsmarted them both.
Sitting in the front row of the courtroom every day was an agonizing test of endurance. I had to listen to defense attorneys try to assassinate Katherine’s character, painting her as jealous and unstable. But the evidence was insurmountable. The financial records clearly showed Bradley had stolen nearly seven hundred thousand dollars. And then, the prosecution played the video. On the massive courtroom screens, the sound of her body hitting the floor echoed off the high ceilings, causing several jurors to look away in tears.

Heather’s defense strategy was to blame the man, sobbing on the stand that Bradley forced her into the cover-up. But the prosecution presented text messages she had sent weeks before the murder: "We need to end this. She’s suffocating us. Imagine the house, the money, just us." She wasn't a victim; she was the architect of the greed. When Bradley took the stand, he tried to look remorseful, looking directly at me to apologize. I didn't blink. I stared right back at him with absolute, unyielding coldness.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours. I stood in the gallery, holding my brother’s hand. "We find the defendant, Bradley Thomas, guilty of murder in the first degree." Bradley slumped forward, his face hitting the oak table. "We find the defendant, Heather Vance, guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and accessory after the fact." Heather let out a piercing, hysterical scream as the bailiffs moved in to cuff them. Justice had been served. It didn't bring Katherine back, but as I watched them being led away in chains, I felt a heavy, suffocating weight lift from my shoulders.
