Chapter 12 - Selina's Broken Mask

Three days later, the Federal Detention Center for Women held its preliminary evidentiary deposition in Courtroom 3B.
Selina Cole sat at the defense table dressed in a beige institutional jumpsuit, her hands cuffed to a belly chain.
Her expensive blonde highlights were already fading, revealing dark roots, and her skin looked sallow without her luxury skincare regimens.
Beside her sat a court-appointed public defender, looking thoroughly overwhelmed by the mountain of prosecution exhibits stacked on the table.
Across the aisle sat Chief Prosecutor Sarah Miller and Detective Marcus Cruz.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, completely composed, watching Selina like a hawk tracking a wounded rodent.
Selina kept turning around, shooting venomous glares at me, her painted lips twisted in bitter fury.
Judge Evelyn Carter entered the bench, her black robes billowing as she took her seat and slammed the wooden gavel.
“State versus Selina Cole, Case Number 4821,” Judge Carter stated sharply.
“We are here to review the defendant’s motion for a reduced bail bond and evaluate the admissibility of state exhibit twelve.”
Selina’s public defender stood up nervously.
“Your Honor, my client was an unwilling bystander to the domestic tragedy that occurred at the Vance residence.”
“She acted under duress, fearing that Julian Vance would turn the knife on her next.”
“She has fully cooperated with the state by providing background voice memos documenting Julian Vance’s unstable mental state.”
“We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
Prosecutor Miller rose from her chair, holding up a sleek black USB flash drive.
“Your Honor, the state strongly opposes bail and formally introduces Exhibit Twelve into evidence.”
“This drive contains the complete, uncompressed audio recording retrieved directly from the victim’s Apple Watch.”
“It captured the exact twenty seconds immediately following the stabbing.”
Miller turned to the courtroom audio console, plugging the drive into the digital playback system.
The crisp, high-definition audio filled the silent courtroom.
Julian’s terrified, ragged breathing played through the overhead speakers:
“The scratch on your arm… the police will investigate the angle! They’ll know it didn't match a violent struggle!”
And then, Selina Cole’s cold, venomous, calculated voice rang out with crystal-clear resonance:
“You idiot, you weren't supposed to ask stupid questions after the job was done! The scratch is just the excuse we give the press!”
“Now help me clean the counter before the doorman notices the noise!”
The words hung in the air like a death sentence.
Judge Carter’s eyebrows raised in icy disgust, her gaze shifting down from the ceiling speakers straight into Selina’s face.
Selina’s face turned completely gray.
Her public defender slowly sat down, closing his briefcase with a quiet click, knowing there was nothing on Earth that could save her from that recording.
“Furthermore, Your Honor,” Prosecutor Miller added, stepping closer to the bench.
“Forensic crime scene analysis has completed the chemical comparison of the weapon.”
“The small scratch on Ms. Cole’s right forearm was analyzed by the state medical examiner.”
“The scratch did not contain Julian Vance’s DNA, nor did it match the serrated blade of the fruit knife.”
“It was made using a disposable surgical razor blade that Detective Cruz found wrapped in a paper towel inside Ms. Cole’s designer purse.”
Gasps erupted from the small pool of journalists seated in the back of the courtroom.
Selina’s hands began to shake violently against her metal belly chain.
She leaped up from her chair, knocking the defense table forward, her eyes wild with feral rage.
“She’s lying! They manufactured that audio!” Selina screamed, pointing her shackled finger straight at me in the gallery.
“Nora Vance bought off the police! She’s using her father's fortune to frame me!”
“I was the one Julian loved! He never wanted you, Nora! You were just an empty placeholder!”
“He hated touching you! He told me you made him sick!”
Judge Carter slammed her gavel down three times with furious force.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
“Silence in this courtroom!” Judge Carter roared.
“Bail is denied unconditionally!”
“Based on the overwhelming prima facie evidence of premeditated conspiracy, the defendant is remanded to state custody without bond!”
“Officers, remove the defendant immediately!”
Two female bailiffs grabbed Selina by her upper arms, wrenching her away from the table.
Selina fought against them, thrashing her chained limbs, her manicured nails clawing helplessly at the air.
“You won't get away with this, Nora!” Selina shrieked, her voice cracking into a ragged wail as she was dragged toward the side holding cell.
“You’re alone! Your husband hates you, and your baby is dead! You have nothing!”
I didn't move an inch.
I sat tall in the gallery, my spine straight, watching her scream until the heavy reinforced door slammed shut, cutting off her voice mid-sentence.
I adjusted my coat, picked up my leather gloves, and stood up with quiet elegance.
She was wrong.
I wasn't alone.

I had survived their knives, stripped their masks, and reclaimed my name from their filthy hands.
And today, the law had finally clamped its jaws around her throat.
