Chapter 8 - The Flight at Sunset

Across town, inside the penthouse suite of the Grand Horizon Hotel, Selina Cole was pacing across the plush velvet rug like a caged panther.
Her designer sunglasses sat discarded on the glass coffee table beside an empty glass of gin.
Her cell phone buzzed incessantly on the counter—calls from journalists, social media notifications, and high-strung messages from mutual friends in the elite social circle.
The breaking news bulletin from St. Jude’s Memorial was still playing on the mounted television in the corner on mute.
“NORA VANCE AWAKE: POLICE QUESTIONING UNDERWAY.”
Selina grabbed the crystal tumbler and hurled it against the opposite wall, shattering it into a hundred sparkling shards.
“Stupid, incompetent idiot!” Selina shrieked at the empty room.
“He had one simple job! One knife, two stabs, and he couldn't even finish her off!”
The heavy double doors of the suite clicked open, and Julian Vance burst in, breathing heavily, his tie completely undone.
He slammed the door shut, locking all three deadbolts with shaking hands.
“Julian!” Selina snapped, rushing toward him and grabbing his lapels. “What happened at the hospital? Did Arthur get the injunction? Did you get the watch?!”
Julian shoved her hands away, stumbling toward the wet bar and pouring himself three fingers of straight bourbon with trembling hands.
He downed the liquor in a single burning gulp, slamming the glass down so hard the mahogany wood cracked.
“It’s over, Selina,” Julian stammered, his eyes bloodshot, his skin pale as chalk.
“Nora looked straight at me.”
“She’s not brain-damaged. She remembers everything.”
“And Detective Cruz took the watch into police custody before Arthur could serve the restraining order!”
Selina stepped back, her manicured fingers digging into her hair in genuine, rising panic.
“What do you mean he took it?!” she screamed.
“Did they unlock it?! Did Cruz hear the recording?!”
“I don't know!” Julian yelled back, his voice cracking into hysterics.
“Sterling is filing an emergency motion to suppress the evidence, but Cruz looked at me like he already knew!”
“If they pull that audio file, Selina, we are going to prison for twenty-five years to life!”
Selina stared at Julian’s sweating, pathetic face, and for the first time, the veneer of romantic affection completely disappeared from her features.
She looked at him with naked, cold contempt.
She had never loved Julian Vance.
She had left him six years ago when he was broke, and she only returned when his logistics tech startup reached a valuation of forty million dollars.
Her plan had been simple: manipulate Julian’s lingering obsession with her, convince him that Nora was an unhinged threat, push him into a violent confrontation, and then step into the vacuum as the grieving billionaire’s new wife.
Now, the idiot had botched the execution, left a digital recording, and led the homicide division straight to their doorstep.
Selina took a slow, deep breath, forcing her racing heart to calm down.
“Pack your bags, Julian,” she said with chilling precision.
“What?” Julian blinked, wiping sweat from his forehead.
“Pack your bags right now,” Selina repeated, walking swiftly toward the bedroom closet and pulling out two leather duffle bags.
“Arthur Sterling can file all the paperwork he wants, but if Cruz gets that judge’s signature, tactical police will breach this suite within two hours.”
“We’re taking the company’s chartered Gulfstream jet at the private executive airfield.”
“Where are we going?” Julian asked, his voice trembling like a frightened child.
“The Cayman Islands,” Selina said smoothly, unzipping a hidden pocket in her carry-on bag to reveal two valid passports and several offshore bearer certificates.
“You transferred four point two million dollars into my shell company account last month.”
“That money is already sitting in a non-extradition account under my maiden name.”
“We board the private flight, land in George Town by midnight, and disappear before the state prosecutor even finishes drafting the indictment.”
Julian stared at the passports, his mind spinning between sheer terror and the desperate hope of escape.
“What about Vance Logistics? What about my company?”
Selina walked up to him, placing her hands on his cheeks, forcing him to look into her seductive, deceitful eyes.
“The company is gone, Julian,” she whispered with sweet poison.
“If you stay here, you’ll spend the rest of your youth rotting in a state penitentiary while Nora takes every single asset you built.”
“Come with me. We have four million in cash. We can start over in South America where nobody knows our names.”
Julian looked into her eyes, completely blinded by her manipulation just as he had been on the day he stabbed me.
“Okay,” Julian nodded feverishly. “Okay, let’s go right now.”
Twenty minutes later, a nondescript black SUV slipped out of the hotel’s underground service parking lot, heading west toward the executive airfield on the outskirts of the city.
The late afternoon sun sank below the industrial skyline, painting the horizon in hues of bruised purple and blood orange.
Inside the SUV, Julian kept checking the rear-view mirror every thirty seconds, jumpy at every pair of headlights behind them.
Selina sat in the passenger seat, typing rapid encrypted messages on a burner phone to a corporate pilot on standby.
“Engine startup authorized. Clearance code Tango-Four-Zero. We arrive in ten minutes.”
At 5:18 p.m., the black SUV pulled through the secondary service gate of the private airport, rolling past corporate hangars toward a sleek white Gulfstream G550 idling on the tarmac.
The jet’s twin turbines were already whining with a low, vibrating roar, the boarding stairs lowered and waiting.
Julian slammed the SUV into park, grabbed his duffle bag, and leaped out of the vehicle.
“We made it,” Julian gasped, a wild, delirious smile breaking across his face as the jet exhaust blew warm air against his clothes.
“Selina, we actually made it!”
Selina climbed out of the car, carrying her leather handbag, a cold, mocking smirk playing on her lips.
“Yes, Julian,” Selina murmured, looking past him toward the stairs. “You made it this far.”
Suddenly, the blinding, blinding glare of four massive high-intensity halogen spotlights exploded from the roof of the adjacent hangar.
The entire tarmac was instantly illuminated as bright as high noon.
Before Julian could raise his hands to shield his eyes, the screech of tactical tires tore across the asphalt.
Three unmarked black Dodge Chargers and two armored SWAT transport vans roared out from behind the hangar, boxing the Gulfstream and the SUV into a steel blockade.
Over the deafening roar of the jet engines, a booming voice echoed through a tactical megaphone:
“JULIAN VANCE! SELINA COLE! THIS IS THE METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT!”
“STEP AWAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND GET ON THE GROUND IMMEDIATELY!”
Julian froze, the duffle bag slipping from his limp shoulder and hitting the tarmac with a dull thud.
Dozens of armed tactical officers in black tactical vests poured out of the vehicles, raising assault rifles and semi-automatic sidearms directly at Julian’s chest.
Red laser sighting dots danced across Julian’s forehead, his chest, and the center of his throat.
Detective Marcus Cruz stepped forward from behind the lead patrol cruiser, holding a signed, stamped parchment document in his left hand.
Beside Cruz stood two federal marshals in windbreakers.
“It’s over, Vance,” Detective Cruz shouted over the roar of the idling jet.
“Judge Evelyn Carter signed the warrants twenty minutes ago.”
“Attempted murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit murder, and felony flight to avoid prosecution.”
Julian turned in sheer, manic hysteria toward Selina, reaching for her arm.
“Selina! What do we do?! Tell them something!”
Selina Cole took two rapid steps backward, raising both hands high in the air, her face instantly melting into an expression of theatrical victimhood.
“Don't shoot! Please, officers, don't shoot!” Selina cried out, her voice loud, shrill, and perfectly rehearsed.
“I didn't do anything!”
“He forced me into the car at gunpoint!”
“Julian Vance stabbed his wife and kidnapped me to use as a human shield!”
Julian stood completely paralyzed on the tarmac, staring at the woman he had ruined his life for.
His jaw hung open in absolute, devastating disbelief.
“Selina…?” Julian choked out, his voice drowned out by the scream of sirens and the thundering commands of the SWAT officers closing the distance.
“What… what are you saying? You planned this! You told me to stab her!”
Selina didn't even look at him.
She dropped to her knees, sobbing toward the police officers.
“He’s crazy! He’s completely insane! Arrest him before he kills someone else!”
Detective Cruz walked up to Julian, kicked his legs apart, and shoved his face violently against the hood of the black SUV.
The cold metal bit into Julian’s cheek as heavy steel handcuffs ratcheted tightly around his wrists.
Click-clack.

Cruz leaned down, his voice cold and steady in Julian’s ringing ear:
“Nora sends her regards, Mr. Vance.”
