Chapter 12 - THE LION'S DEN AT THE HARBOR CLUB

The Harbor Club rose above the waterfront like a temple dedicated to unchecked greed and corporate decadence.

Valets in gold-trimmed waistcoats lined the circular marble driveway as sleek luxury sedans and limousines arrived under blinding chandeliers.

When our armored Maybach glided to a halt beneath the portico, the whispers began before we even stepped out onto the red carpet.

Mateo emerged first, radiating an aura of lethal sophistication in his tailored black tuxedo.

He turned, offering his arm to assist me as I stepped into the flashing lights of the private press.

The crimson silk gown hugged my frame like armor, cascading to the marble floor with deliberate grace.

Every eye in the foyer locked onto us in stunned, suffocating silence.

Word had already spread that Hastings Maritime had been swallowed by the Vanzetti syndicate, but nobody expected the captive daughter to walk beside the boss as his queen.

Mateo leaned down, his warm lips brushing the shell of my ear as we crossed the threshold.

Keep your head high, Sophia; every person in this room knows they are standing in the presence of predators.

We swept into the grand ballroom beneath towering crystal fixtures reflecting off polished parquet floors.

Dozens of elite power brokers froze mid-conversation, glasses of champagne hovering halfway to their lips.

At the center of the elevated VIP lounge sat Dominic Castiglione, flanked by four hulking enforcers and two crooked city commissioners.

Castiglione was fifty-five years old, with slicked-back silver hair, a scarred neck, and cold reptilian eyes that oozed menace.

When his gaze landed on me, a vile, mocking smirk curled across his leathery face.

Well, well, Mateo Vanzetti has finally arrived, Castiglione boomed across the ballroom, raising his glass in faux salute.

And he brought Arthur Hastings’ precious little collateral along for the show.

I didn’t wait for Mateo to speak; I released his arm and walked straight toward the VIP lounge with measured, unyielding strides.

The crowd parted before me like water before a bow, terrified of the confrontation brewing in the center of the floor.

I stopped five feet from Castiglione’s table, looking down at him with utter disdain.

I’m not collateral, Dominic, I said, my voice carrying clearly through the hushed silence of the ballroom.

I am the sole surviving heir of Elena Hastings, and the woman who froze your Swiss liquidity forty minutes ago.

Castiglione’s smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, twitching rage along his jawline.

What did you say, you arrogant little bitch, Castiglione snarled, stepping up from his leather booth.

Check your private phone, Dominic, I replied calmly, tilting my head.

Your offshore shell accounts in Zurich and Grand Cayman have been flagged for human trafficking and financial fraud under federal jurisdiction.

You can’t even pay the valet to bring your car around tonight, let alone fund the mercenaries you sent to die on Pier 42.

Castiglione’s chief lieutenant frantically pulled a phone from his coat, checking the encrypted balance screen before turning pale as a corpse.

Boss, he stammered, his voice shaking.

She’s telling the truth; our primary clearing accounts are completely frozen at the central exchange.

The ballroom erupted into frantic, terrified murmurs as the city’s political elite realized the ground was crumbling beneath their feet.

Castiglione’s eyes burned with rabid, murderous hatred as he reached inside his jacket.

May you like

You think you can play games with me in my own house, he roared.

Before his hand could clear his lapel, the double oak doors at the back of the VIP lounge were kicked open with a thunderous crash.
