Chapter 5 - WHISPERS ACROSS THE MAHOGANY TABLE

The sleek glass conference room on the top floor of the Vanzetti Tower hummed with tense anticipation as three of Mateo’s highest-ranking associates took their seats around the custom walnut table.
Gianni Rossi, the syndicate’s aging consigliere, stared at me with undisguised hostility from across the room, his wrinkled hands resting heavily on a stack of financial portfolios.
I told the boss that bringing an outside civilian into our inner circle was a monumental mistake, Gianni rasped, his gravelly voice echoing off the glass walls.
She’s Arthur Hastings' daughter, and bloodlines like that are always tainted with cowardice and debt.
I didn't blink, maintaining my composure as I slowly adjusted my designer blazer and leaned back in my executive chair.
My father’s debts have been settled in full through my personal service contract, Gianni, I replied smoothly, my voice cutting through the smoky air like a scalpel.
If you spent half as much time auditing our shipping manifests as you do questioning my lineage, maybe we wouldn't have four million dollars missing from our Zurich accounts.
The entire conference room went dead silent.
Gianni’s face flushed a deep, mottled shade of crimson as he half-rose from his chair, slamming his fist onto the walnut table.
You watch your insolent mouth, little girl, Gianni roared.
There is no money missing from Zurich, and you have no business looking at accounts reserved for senior partners.
Isn't there, I murmured calmly, plugging my secure flash drive into the sleek multimedia console embedded in the table.
With a few swift keystrokes, I projected a detailed financial audit onto the massive 4K screen mounted on the wall behind Gianni.
Columns of red numbers, unauthorized wire transfers, and shell company routing codes lit up the room in glowing crimson.
For the past eighteen months, someone in this very room has been skimming three point two percent off every container shipment passing through the South Boston terminal, I announced, standing up to address the table.
And judging by the authorization signatures on these wire transfers, it wasn't some anonymous dockworker.
Gianni looked like he had just swallowed a mouthful of crushed glass, his breathing turning shallow and ragged as he stared at the glowing screen.
Before Gianni could stammer out a defense, the heavy double doors at the end of the conference room swung open.
Mateo Vanzetti walked in, his dark tailored overcoat draped over his arm, his piercing blue eyes sweeping across the tense faces in the room.
What is the meaning of this commotion, Mateo asked quietly, taking his seat at the head of the table.
Sophia found a leak in our offshore accounts, Boss, one of the junior capos muttered nervously.
Mateo turned his steady gaze toward me, waiting for my report.
I bypassed our standard auditing protocols this morning, Mateo, I stated clearly, meeting his intense stare without flinching.
I found a systematic embezzlement ring operating right under our noses, draining millions from our legitimate import channels.
And who authorized the transfers, Mateo asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper.
I pressed a button on my remote, and the screen flashed a high-resolution image of Gianni’s personal cryptographic signature attached to every single fraudulent transaction.
Gianni leaped out of his chair, pointing a trembling finger at me while screaming curses at the top of his lungs.
She forged those documents, Boss, it’s a trap set by an outsider trying to claw her way to the top.
Mateo didn't even look at Gianni; his eyes remained locked on the data scrolling across the screen before turning slowly back to his aging consigliere.
Gianni, you handled our European accounts for twenty years, Mateo said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.
Why would you steal from a family that fed you.
Please, Boss, it was just a small percentage, Gianni whimpered, collapsing back into his chair as he realized the game was up.
The heavy oak doors opened once more, and two armed guards stepped silently into the room, waiting for a single nod from their boss.
Mateo gave a barely perceptible tilt of his head.
Take him downstairs and audit every asset he owns, Mateo commanded coldly.
As Gianni was dragged screaming from the conference room, the remaining associates sat frozen in their seats, staring at me with a new, grudging level of respect.
Mateo stood up slowly, walking around the table until he was standing right beside my chair.
He leaned down, his breath brushing against my ear as he spoke in a low, intimate murmur.
You didn't just save us a few million dollars today, Sophia.
You proved that your bloodline is far stronger than your father's ever was.
I turned my head slightly, our faces mere inches apart, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs.
I didn't do it for you, Mateo, I whispered back, my eyes flashing with fierce defiance.
May you like
I did it to protect my empire.
A slow, dangerous smile crept across Mateo’s lips, and for the first time since that rainy night on Commonwealth Avenue, I realized we were no longer captor and captive.
