Chapter 13 - THE RECKONING OF ARTHUR HASTINGS

Two of Mateo’s plainclothes operators dragged a battered, trembling figure into the center of the elevated lounge.
It was Arthur Hastings, his clothes torn, his face bruised, and his spirit entirely annihilated.
Behind him stumbled Brenda, her mascara running down her tear-stained cheeks in grotesque black streaks.
Castiglione had captured them attempting to flee across the Massachusetts border hours earlier, intending to use them as bargaining chips against us.
Instead, they had become the final witnesses to their own destruction.
Arthur collapsed onto his knees on the polished floor, looking up at the crowd of people he had tried to impress for thirty years.
Sophia, please, Arthur wheezed, his cracked lips trembling in terror.
Tell them to let us go; we never meant for Elena to suffer, it was just business, we had no choice.
The entire ballroom gasped in horror as Arthur’s pathetic confession rang out through the speakers of the house audio system.
I had tapped the microphone on the central podium before walking over, broadcasting his every desperate word to every senator, judge, and socialite in attendance.
You murdered my mother with thallium, Arthur, I said, each word sounding like a heavy hammer falling on iron.
You forged her will while her body was still warm in the hospital bed.
And then you tried to frame me for your offshore smuggling operations to save your own miserable skin.
Arthur buried his face in his trembling hands, weeping openly like a broken child.
Brenda pointed a manicured, trembling finger at her husband, shrieking into the microphone.
Arthur bought the poison from Castiglione’s apothecary in the North End, Brenda screamed, desperate to save herself from the gallows.
He paid fifty thousand dollars in unmarked bills to make it look like lung failure so he could claim Elena’s trust funds before the divorce went through.
Castiglione’s face went dead white as the corruption of his entire network was laid bare before every camera in the room.
You stupid, cowardly animals, Castiglione roared, drawing a silver pistol from his holster and aiming it directly at Arthur’s head.
Mateo moved with blinding, inhuman speed.
A deafening gunshot cracked through the ballroom, but it didn’t come from Castiglione’s weapon.
Mateo had drawn a concealed compact firearm from his tuxedo sleeve, putting a round clean through Castiglione’s right shoulder before the mobster could pull the trigger.
Castiglione screamed, dropping the gun as blood splattered across the white linen tablecloth behind him.
Federal sirens began to wail in the distance, echoing off the harbor waters and growing louder with every passing heartbeat.
Dante had forwarded the unsealed coroner's dossier and the decrypted transaction logs directly to the United States Attorney’s Office ten minutes earlier.
The corrupt politicians in the room scattered like roaches toward the emergency exits, trampling over each other in sheer panic.
Arthur looked up at me from the floor, his eyes begging for a shred of filial mercy that no longer existed.
Sophia, Arthur sobbed, reaching out to grasp the hem of my crimson gown.
I’m your father, you can't let them take me to prison for the rest of my life.
I pulled the silk fabric smoothly from his filthy grip, looking down at him with cold, absolute detachment.
You died to me the moment you sold my future across that table on Commonwealth Avenue, I whispered.
Rot in the dark, Arthur.
Uniformed federal marshals and state police swarmed through the shattered doors, slamming Arthur and Brenda against the marble floor in heavy zip-ties.
May you like
As they dragged my weeping father away into the flashing blue lights, I felt the final invisible chains of my past snap cleanly in two.
Arthur Hastings was gone forever, and my mother’s name was finally vindicated before the entire city.
