Chapter 5 - THE RETURN TO THE COLD HOLE

The high-beam headlights illuminated the empty pit like a stage under theater spotlights.

On Frank’s monitor, the time stamp read 12:14 AM.

A sleek black luxury SUV came to a halt twenty yards from the mound of loose earth.

The engine cut out, plunging the clearing into an eerie, frozen stillness broken only by the sound of the wind whipping through the pines.

The driver’s side door opened first.

Mark Vance stepped out into the freezing sleet, his expensive down jacket pulled tight around his collar.

He looked around the perimeter of the trees nervously, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his shoulders hunched like a guilty dog.

Then Eleanor emerged from the passenger side, wearing full-length fur and leather gloves, carrying a large plastic jug of commercial caustic lye.

Richard Vance and Chloe stepped out of the back seats.

Richard was carrying two heavy canvas sacks of agricultural lime over his broad shoulders.

Chloe remained near the rear bumper, hugging herself against the freezing gusts, her head turned away from the pit in sheer cowardice.

“Hurry up,” Richard barked, his voice picked up with startling clarity by Frank’s high-gain directional microphone hidden in the branches above.

“The ground will freeze rock-solid before dawn. If we don't turn the soil now, the chemical won't dissolve properly.”

“Mom,” Mark stuttered, his voice trembling noticeably as he approached the edge of the mound.

“Are you sure… are you sure she’s already gone?”

“Don't be pathetic, Mark,” Eleanor snapped, marching forward with cold, unhurried precision.

“It’s twenty-six degrees out here. She had a severe concussion and was buried to her neck in damp subsoil without a coat.”

“A delicate little clerk doesn't survive two hours in this weather.”

“Now grab the shovel and uncover the face so Richard can pour the lime.”

Mark hesitated, his boots sliding in the mud as he reached for the rusted steel shovel Eleanor had left planted in the earth.

Through the infrared monitor, I watched my husband’s face contort with a sickening mixture of guilt and self-preservation.

He gripped the ash handle, took a step toward the head of the grave, and suddenly stopped dead in his tracks.

His flashlight beam hit the depression in the soil.

The hole was empty.

The loose dirt had been scooped back onto the edges, and the blanket of pine needles inside the pit was stained with smeared patches of frozen blood.

“Mom…” Mark choked out, dropping the shovel with a clatter.

“What is it now?” Eleanor sneered, stepping up beside him.

“She’s not here.”

Eleanor snatched the tactical flashlight from Mark’s trembling hand and shoved the beam directly into the center of the pit.

For three seconds, neither of them moved.

The silence captured by the microphone was deafening.

“Where is she?” Richard demanded, dropping the heavy bags of lime into the mud with a wet thud.

“Eleanor! Where did you put her?”

“She was right here!” Eleanor hissed, her voice finally cracking with real panic as she swept the beam wildly across the dark tree line.

“Her arms were pinned! Her shoulders were packed tight! She couldn't have climbed out of this hole alone!”

“Someone helped her,” Richard realized, his face turning pale in the high-contrast infrared feed.

“Look at the rim! Those are heavy boot prints—size twelve logging boots!”

“It’s Marcus,” Mark screamed, clutching his hair with both hands, his composure completely dissolving into hysteria.

“I told you! I told you he was watching her! He tracked her phone!”

“Shut your mouth, you fool!” Richard roared, grabbing his son by the collar and shaking him violently.

“Her phone is in the glove compartment of my car, crushed into pieces!”

“Then who dug her out?” Chloe shrieked from the car, her voice shrill with mounting terror.

“Dad, we have to leave! We have to leave right now! If she goes to the police—”

“Nobody is going to the police!” Richard bellowed, his eyes darting through the black woods.

“If she were with the police, there would be sirens on this ridge right now!”

“She crawled out into the brush with some local redneck. She’s bleeding, she’s freezing, and she can't make it two miles on foot!”

Richard reached inside his heavy overcoat and pulled out a semi-automatic handgun, racking the slide with a distinct metallic click.

“Spread out. Search the logging trail.”

“We find her before she hits the state highway, or this entire family spends the rest of their lives in a federal penitentiary!”

Inside the warm cabin, Frank Keller stood up slowly, picking up his double-barreled shotgun from the corner rack.

He looked at the live monitor, then turned his gaze toward me.

“They’re coming down the ridge trail, Clara.”

“They have guns,” I said, watching Richard Vance wave his weapon toward the dark path leading straight toward Frank’s clearing.

“So do I,” Frank replied calmly, checking the brass rims of his heavy buckshot cartridges.

“And unlike Richard Vance, I actually know how to use mine in the dark.”

Right then, Frank’s computer let out a sharp, digital chime.

A direct incoming communication window appeared on the desktop, overriding the surveillance feeds.

Marcus Sterling’s face appeared on the encrypted video feed, surrounded by the flashing blue-and-red tactical lights of an emergency convoy.

“Clara,” Marcus said, his voice ringing through the cabin speakers with thunderous authority.

“Tell your friend to hold his fire and stay inside the structure.”

“Look at camera three.”

I leaned over the desk and switched the display to the wide-angle panoramic view covering the southern entrance of the mountain access road.

Through the falling sleet, six unmarked tactical assault vehicles and three black federal SUVs had completely sealed off the gravel exit.

Spike strips had been laid across the only road down the mountain.

Dozens of armed tactical officers in full tactical gear were advancing up the ridge on foot, moving silently between the trees like wraiths in the dark.

The Vance family was not searching for an injured victim in the woods.
