Chapter 6 - THE NOOSE TIGHTENS AROUND THE VANCE EMPIRE

The flashing red-and-blue strobe lights of the federal convoy painted the towering pine trees in eerie, pulsing hues of crimson and cobalt.
On Frank’s monitor, Richard Vance and his trembling son Mark froze midway down the frozen timber path as the crunch of heavy tactical boots echoed through the ravine.
“Federal Law Enforcement! Drop your weapon, Richard!” a booming voice amplified through a high-decibel bullhorn tore through the quiet night.
Richard spun around frantically, his pistol raised in a blind panic before he realized he was completely surrounded by thirty heavily armed federal agents emerging from the shadows.
“Lower the firearm immediately or we will open fire!” the lead commander barked, his laser sights instantly painting a dozen red dots across Richard’s chest and shoulders.
Mark dropped to his knees in the muddy slush, sobbing hysterically and clutching his head while Eleanor emerged from the SUV, screaming curses at the sky.
“Do you know who my husband is?” Eleanor shrieked, waving her leather gloves at the nearest tactical officer.
“We are the Vance family! This is private property! You have no right—!”
“Federal Search and Seizure Warrant signed by District Judge Harrison,” an icy, familiar voice interrupted as a sleek black sedan pulled to a halt behind the tactical vans.
Marcus Sterling stepped out into the freezing sleet, wearing a tailored wool overcoat and leather gloves, his eyes fixed on Eleanor with absolute contempt.
“Good evening, Eleanor,” Marcus said smoothly, his breath pluming in the cold mountain air.
“I believe you’ve been looking for Clara. Unfortunately for you, she’s currently watching your entire corporate empire collapse from a very comfortable distance.”
Through the live-feed camera, I watched Richard drop his semi-automatic pistol into the mud as two federal agents pinned him face-down against the hood of his luxury SUV.
Chloe was hauled out of the backseat, shrieking in terror as her wrists were zipped tight with heavy plastic flex-cuffs.
Mark didn’t even attempt to run; he simply wept into the frozen dirt like a broken child while the cuffs went on his wrists.
Inside the cabin, I let out a long, shuddering breath that felt like releasing a boulder from my chest.
Frank walked over, placed a warm, heavy hand on my trembling shoulder, and handed me another mug of hot tea.
“They’re caught in the web, kid,” Frank said quietly.
“And the sun hasn’t even come up yet.”
“The arrest is only the first step,” I replied, taking a sip of the sweet tea as my hands finally began to steady.
“Julian Myers is still at the Grand Oak Medical Clinic with the master server database.”
“If we don’t secure his clinic files before dawn, his IT department will run an automated wipe script and purge every shred of the forged lab reports.”
Marcus’s voice crackled through the open speaker on Frank’s desk before I could even pick up the satellite phone.
“Clara, are you listening?” Marcus asked, his tone crisp and decisive.
“I hear you, Marcus,” I answered, leaning close to the mic.
“My tactical team has Richard, Eleanor, Mark, and Chloe secured in separate transport vans,” Marcus reported.
“They’re being hauled straight to the federal holding facility downtown.”
“What about Julian Myers?” I asked urgently.
“Already handled,” Marcus replied with a cold smirk.
“My cyber-forensics unit locked down the Grand Oak Medical Clinic’s external servers twenty minutes ago using the metadata packet you sent.”
“Dr. Myers was caught trying to shred physical lab logs in his office basement.”
“He’s currently singing like a canary in exchange for a reduced sentence.”
I stood up from the desk, the pain in my bruised ribs dulling as pure adrenaline took over.
“Then it’s time to settle accounts,” I said softly.
“Get me a secure line to the lead prosecutor in the district attorney’s office.”
May you like
“And Marcus? Book me a flight to the federal courthouse in the city for eight o’clock this morning.”
“I want to be sitting in the front row when the judge reads the charges against my loving family.”
