Chapter 3 - Audrey Vance

The morning sun cast a harsh, unforgiving light over the city of Chicago.
Clara dressed in the only dry clothes she had left: a simple black skirt and a modest blouse.
She left the children under the watchful eye of Luke, promising him she would return before lunch.
The address in the yellow folder led her to a towering glass skyscraper in the heart of the financial district.
Clara stepped into the elevator, clutching the folder to her chest like a shield.
On the 45th floor, the doors opened to a sleek, minimalist reception area.
"Vance & Associates" was spelled out in brushed steel letters behind the desk.
"I need to see Audrey Vance," Clara told the receptionist. "My name is Clara Sterling."
The receptionist’s eyes darted to Clara’s face, a flicker of recognition flashing across her features.
"Right this way, Mrs. Sterling. Ms. Vance has been expecting you."
Clara was led down a long corridor to a corner office overlooking Lake Michigan.
Behind a massive mahogany desk sat a woman in her late fifties, with sharp, calculating eyes and silver hair cut in a severe bob.
Audrey Vance stood up as Clara entered.
She didn't offer empty condolences or pitying smiles.
"Sit down, Clara," Audrey said, pointing to a leather chair. "I heard about the stunt Richard pulled last night."
Clara blinked in surprise. "How did you know?"
"I've been monitoring the Sterling family’s movements since Mark first hired me," Audrey replied, pouring two cups of black coffee. "Your father-in-law is a desperate man. And desperate men make stupid mistakes."
Clara slid the yellow folder across the desk.
Audrey didn't even open it.
"I have the copies in my safe," the lawyer said. "Mark was a brilliant man. He knew his illness would take him before he could clean up his father's mess, so he built a fortress around you and the children."
"Richard thinks he owns the house," Clara said, her voice shaking slightly. "He locked us out in the rain."
Audrey smiled, but it was a cold, dangerous expression.
"Let him think that for a few more days. It will make his inevitable fall much more entertaining."
Audrey walked over to the window, looking out at the city below.
"Right now, Richard is scrambling. He thinks with Mark gone, he can seize the 51% shares. He has an emergency board meeting scheduled for tomorrow to officially name himself CEO."
"Can he do that?" Clara asked, her heart pounding.
"Not if the true majority shareholder walks into that room and objects," Audrey said, turning back to face her.
Clara gripped the arms of her chair. "Me."
"Yes, you." Audrey leaned over the desk. "But you need to understand something, Clara. The moment you walk into that boardroom, you are no longer the quiet, compliant daughter-in-law."
Audrey pointed a manicured finger at the folder.
"You have the evidence of his embezzlement. You hold the deed to the estate he’s sleeping in. You have the power to destroy him."
Clara thought of Luke’s bruised face.
She thought of Eleanor throwing her children’s clothes into the mud.
"I don't just want to destroy him," Clara said, her voice dropping to a steely whisper. "I want him to feel exactly what my children felt last night."

Audrey’s eyes gleamed with approval.
"Good. First, we get your children out of that motel. I’ve arranged a secure penthouse for you. Then, we prepare for war."
