Chapter 7 - The Turning Tide

The mention of the pension funds was the final nail in the coffin.
Richard physically shrank in his chair, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
"You... you don't know what you're talking about," he stammered, though his voice lacked any conviction.
Clara stood up straight, addressing the entire board.
"Gentlemen," Clara said, projecting authority. "My late husband spent the last five years conducting a private, internal audit of this company. He discovered massive discrepancies in the employee pension accounts."
Gasps echoed around the table. Embezzlement was one thing, but stealing from the pensions of thousands of employees was a crime that would bring down the entire company and guarantee prison time.
"He compiled every wire transfer, every offshore account, and every forged signature," Clara continued, patting the thick briefcase. "I have the evidence right here."
Audrey Vance stepped up, looking at the horrified board members.
"Mrs. Sterling has no desire to see this company destroyed by scandal," Audrey stated smoothly. "She is prepared to handle this quietly, to protect the employees and the shareholders."
Clara looked back at Richard.
"But there are conditions," she said.
Richard looked up at her, a broken, defeated old man.
"What do you want?" he croaked.
"First," Clara said, her voice like ice, "you will step down immediately from all positions within Sterling Enterprise. You will sign over your remaining shares to the company to replenish the funds you stole."
Richard closed his eyes, a single tear of humiliation rolling down his cheek.
"Second," Clara continued, turning her gaze to Eleanor, who was now trembling violently. "You will pack your bags and vacate my property in Lake Forest by five o'clock this evening."
Eleanor burst into tears. "Where will we go? We have nothing!"
Clara felt no pity.
She remembered Luke staggering backward in the rain. She remembered Sophia shivering in the cold.
"I suggest you find a cheap motel," Clara said, throwing Eleanor's own words back at her. "After all, you're nobody now."
The board members sat in stunned silence as Richard slowly reached for a pen.
His hands shook as he signed the resignation papers Audrey placed in front of him.
He was signing away his life's work, his reputation, and his freedom, all because he underestimated a mother’s resolve.
When the final signature was placed, Clara took the papers.
"Get out of my building," she commanded.
Richard and Eleanor stood up, stripped of their arrogance, their wealth, and their pride.
They walked out of the boardroom in absolute disgrace, not a single person offering them a word of comfort.
Clara watched the doors close behind them.
She took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the last two weeks finally lifting off her shoulders.

She turned to the board members, offering them a small, professional smile.
"Now, gentlemen," Clara said, taking the seat at the head of the table. "Let's get to work. We have a company to rebuild."
