Chapter 5 - Daniel’s Secret Room

The Hayes estate had survived fires, raids, betrayals, and lawsuits.

Nothing had prepared it for a baby crying at three in the morning.

Sam sat in the enormous guest bedroom surrounded by pillows while Norah warmed formula.

Ethan stood at the doorway.

“You can use the kitchen.”

“I don't want to.”

“You're exhausted.”

“I have managed without your mansion for ten months.”

Ethan considered that.

Then he walked inside.

“You don't trust me.”

Norah laughed.

“You're a mafia boss.”

“I didn't say I was a good man.”

At least he didn't lie.

Norah handed the bottle to Sam.

He drank greedily.

Ethan watched.

“His ears.”

“What?”

“Daniel had the same ears.”

Norah smiled.

“I know.”

A silence formed.

Then Ethan asked:

“Why did Daniel leave the family?”

“He said he wanted normal.”

“Did he tell you what he did before you met?”

“No.”

“Then he was protecting you.”

“Or hiding from you.”

Ethan accepted the accusation.

“Both can be true.”

At dawn, Finn discovered something hidden inside Daniel's old storage unit.

A false wall.

Behind it was a metal staircase.

At the bottom was a room.

Ethan entered first.

Norah followed.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Sophia.

Daniel.

Their father.

Gregory.

Several unfamiliar men.

And Norah.

Her photograph was circled in red.

Norah stepped back.

“Why am I here?”

Ethan looked at the dates.

The first photograph of Norah had been taken eight months before she met Daniel.

Ethan's stomach dropped.

Someone had been watching her.

For a long time.

A drawer contained newspaper clippings.

A birth announcement.

A note.

“Samuel is the key.”

Ethan read it twice.

Norah took the paper.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

Another note was attached.

“Only the child can open the trust.”

Ethan turned toward her.

“Your son.”

Norah's face tightened.

“How?”

They searched the room.

Finally, Ethan found a small metal box.

Inside was a brass lock engraved with three letters.

S.H.

Samuel Hayes.

Norah looked at him.

“Where's the key?”

Ethan remembered the bottle.

The green ring.

He picked it up.

Under the cap was a tiny cavity.

Inside it was a miniature brass key.

Norah covered her mouth.

“The bottle.”

Ethan inserted the key into the lock.

Click.

The box opened.

Inside was a single letter.

Daniel's handwriting.

Ethan read aloud.

“Ethan,

If you found this, I failed to keep my promise.

Dad was never trying to protect the family.

He was protecting the empire.

Sophia found proof that his organization was involved in a trafficking network operated through legitimate businesses.

She refused to stay silent.

Dad ordered her disappearance.

I helped her escape.

Then I met Norah.

I knew keeping her close put her in danger, so I stayed away from you.

When Samuel was born, I realized Dad would never stop.

The only way to end this is the trust.

The evidence inside will expose everything.

But the trust can only be accessed by someone carrying Sophia's bloodline.

Samuel.

Protect my son.

Protect Norah.

And don't trust Gregory.”

Ethan stopped reading.

Norah looked at him.

“Gregory.”

Everything made sense.

The stolen pay.

The restaurant.

The attack.

The questions.

Gregory had not been avoiding Norah because he wanted to cheat her out of $300.

He had been keeping her close.

Watching her.

Waiting for something.

Then footsteps sounded upstairs.

Finn shouted.

“Boss!”

Ethan grabbed Norah's hand.

“Stay behind me.”

A gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Then another.

The bedroom door flew open.

Gregory stood there.

Bleeding from the shoulder.

Holding a gun.

“Give me the boy.”

Norah backed away.

Ethan stepped between them.

“You followed us.”

Gregory smiled.

“You were never supposed to find this room.”

Ethan raised his gun.

“Who sent you?”

Gregory's expression changed.

“Your mother.”

Silence.

Ethan turned.

Evelyn stood at the end of the hallway.

Her face was pale.

Norah whispered:

“No.”

May you like

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I didn't have a choice.”
