Chapter 8 - The Trust

The final piece was hidden beneath the Hayes family cemetery.

Daniel knew the location.

Sophia had told him.

Ethan, Norah, Finn, and Mateo arrived shortly before dawn.

The cemetery was covered in mist.

A mausoleum stood at the far edge.

Inside was a stone wall.

Three symbols.

A key.

A crown.

A child.

Daniel pressed Sam's tiny hand against the final symbol.

The wall opened.

A hidden chamber emerged.

Inside were ledgers.

Photographs.

Encrypted drives.

Videos.

Names.

Dates.

Accounts.

Everything.

Ethan stood motionless.

“My father built this.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Nathaniel operated it after he died.”

Norah looked at the evidence.

“What about Sophia?”

Daniel pointed toward a monitor.

“She left one final recording.”

He pressed play.

Sophia appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

She looked directly at Ethan.

“My brother.”

Ethan's eyes filled.

“I am sorry.”

“You deserved the truth.”

“But I was afraid.”

“I thought losing me would make you cruel.”

“I was wrong.”

Ethan covered his mouth.

Sophia continued.

“Dad believed power meant controlling everyone around him.”

“He taught us fear.”

“I escaped because I refused to become him.”

“I need you to break what he created.”

“Don't protect the Hayes name.”

“Protect the people.”

Then the recording changed.

Sophia held a newborn baby.

Sam.

A tear rolled down Ethan's cheek.

“You have a nephew.”

Ethan whispered.

“No.”

Sophia smiled.

“You have a family.”

The recording ended.

Then alarms sounded.

Nathaniel had found them.

Ethan turned.

“Take the evidence.”

Daniel nodded.

Norah held Sam.

Footsteps approached.

Dozens.

Ethan loaded his weapon.

“I am done running.”

The doors exploded inward.

Chaos followed.

Finn and Mateo covered the entrance.

Daniel secured the drives.

Norah remained in the center of the chamber.

A man stepped through the smoke.

Nathaniel Romano.

He smiled.

“You were always emotional, Ethan.”

Ethan raised his gun.

“You killed my sister.”

Nathaniel laughed.

“No.”

He looked at Daniel.

“He did.”

Daniel went pale.

“You betrayed us.”

“I saved you.”

“For what?”

“To inherit everything.”

Nathaniel's gaze moved to Sam.

“Give me the child.”

Norah stepped backward.

“No.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“That boy belongs to the trust.”

“He belongs to his mother.”

Daniel moved beside her.

“And his father.”

Ethan stood beside both of them.

“For the first time in my life.”

He looked at Daniel.

“I agree with my brother.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Nathaniel's smile disappeared.

Police vehicles surrounded the cemetery.

Ethan looked at Finn.

“You called them?”

Finn nodded.

“Every document went out five minutes ago.”

Nathaniel looked horrified.

Ethan said:

“You wanted a family war.”

May you like

“You got one.”

“But this time, the truth is on our side.”
