Chapter 7 - The Man in the Shadows

Daniel appeared three nights later.
Not at the estate.
Not at the restaurant.
At the pediatric hospital.
Sam had developed a fever.
Norah sat beside his bed holding his tiny hand.
Ethan stood by the window.
The door opened.
A nurse entered.
Then closed it.
She removed her mask.
Daniel.
Norah stopped breathing.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Norah.”
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the room.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me bury an empty grave.”
“I thought it would keep you safe.”
“You let me think our son had no father.”
“I know.”
“I hated myself for surviving you.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know.”
Ethan moved closer.
“You're going to explain.”
Daniel nodded.
“My father discovered Sophia's evidence.”
“He ordered men to kill her.”
“I got her out.”
“Then Nathaniel found us.”
“I staged my death.”
“Why stay away?”
“Because the moment anyone knew I was alive, Norah and Sam would become targets.”
Norah wiped her tears.
“Then why leave us completely?”
“I didn't.”
She stared.
“I watched you.”
“What?”
“For ten months.”
“I was there.”
“You didn't come home.”
“I couldn't.”
“You watched me starve.”
Daniel's face broke.
“I tried to send money.”
“Who stopped it?”
“Gregory.”
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“Gregory was working for Nathaniel?”
“Yes.”
Daniel pulled a drive from his coat.
“This contains bank records.”
“It proves my father built the network.”
“And Nathaniel continued it.”
“Why was Sophia involved?”
“Because she discovered the trust.”
“The trust can expose all of them.”
Norah looked at Sam.
“Why him?”
“Because Sophia's original trust requires DNA confirmation from her descendants.”
“She was the last direct heir.”
Daniel looked at Sam.
“Our son carries her blood.”
Ethan frowned.
“How?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Sophia was his grandmother.”
Norah froze.
“What?”
“Daniel.”
“She was alive when Sam was born.”
“She held him once.”
“Before she disappeared.”
Norah's eyes widened.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because she asked me not to.”
Daniel pulled out another photograph.
Sophia holding newborn Sam.
Norah covered her mouth.
“That was the grocery-store woman.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That was Sophia.”
Norah looked at Ethan.
“I told you.”
The door opened.
A loudspeaker announcement crackled.
Then every light in the hallway went out.
Daniel's face changed.
“They found us.”
Gunfire erupted beyond the door.
Ethan shoved the hospital bed sideways.
“Down!”
Nurses screamed.
Finn and Mateo arrived from the hallway.
Daniel pulled a gun.
Norah held Sam.
The attackers moved fast.
But Ethan's security team was faster.
Within minutes, the corridor fell silent.
Then a message appeared on the hospital television.
A photograph.
Evelyn.
Gregory.
Nathaniel.
And a caption:
“THE HAYES FAMILY WILL BURN.”
Ethan stared at the screen.
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“It has begun.”
