Chapter 2 - Shadows of Jealousy

Over the next few weeks, Vanessa’s disdain for Emily morphed into a quiet, simmering obsession. She noticed the way Daniel’s gaze would subtly follow the young maid when she entered a room to serve tea. She noticed how Daniel would deliberately leave generous tips in his study, knowing Emily was the one who cleaned it. To Vanessa, Emily was a nobody—a speck of dirt on the Sterling family crest. Yet, this maid possessed an effortless, unpolished beauty and a genuine kindness that Vanessa, with all her wealth, could never buy.

The social pressure on Vanessa was mounting. Her father’s political campaign was heavily reliant on an official engagement announcement between her and Daniel. But Daniel was stalling. He remained elusive, polite but emotionally distant. Vanessa needed a scapegoat for her insecurities, and Emily was the perfect target.

Margaret Sterling was preparing to host the annual Sterling Charity Gala, an event that would bring the city's most powerful elite under one roof. The mansion was thrown into a frenzy of preparation. Floral arrangements were flown in from Paris, and caterers bustled through the grand halls.

Vanessa cornered Emily in the pantry two days before the event.

— "You think you're clever, don't you?" — Vanessa sneered, her perfectly manicured nails drumming against the steel counter.

— "I don't know what you mean, Miss Harrington," — Emily replied, keeping her eyes glued to the floor.

— "Don't play the innocent fool with me. I see how you look at Daniel. You are the help. Do not forget your place, or I will gladly remind you of it."

Emily trembled but said nothing. She couldn't afford to lose this job. She swallowed the humiliation, hoping that after the gala, Vanessa’s attention would shift elsewhere. But Vanessa was not looking to merely warn Emily; she was looking to destroy her.
