Chapter 3 - The Eve of the Gala

The night before the gala, the house was electric with nervous energy. Margaret had unlocked the family vault, bringing out the Sterling heirloom jewelry to be cleaned and displayed. Among the treasures was the 'Heart of Midnight,' a breathtaking, vintage diamond-style statement necklace. It was a legendary piece, rumored to be worth more than the mansion itself.

Vanessa stood by the velvet display cases, her eyes locked onto the glittering diamonds. She knew that any scandal involving a theft of this magnitude would result in immediate termination, criminal charges, and complete social ruin. A sinister plan began to weave itself together in her mind.

If she could prove to Daniel that this sweet, innocent maid was actually a cunning thief, it would shatter any illusions he had about her. It would prove to Margaret that the staff needed stricter vetting, and most importantly, it would eliminate the one woman in the house who made Vanessa feel threatened.

She noted Emily’s schedule. The maid would be responsible for managing the guests' cloaks and bags in the foyer during the peak hours of the party. Emily’s own modest brown leather handbag was always kept on a small shelf near the staff entrance, right behind the grand staircase.

— "It's almost too easy," — Vanessa whispered to herself, tracing the glass case.

Meanwhile, Emily was exhausted. Her back ached from polishing miles of marble floors, and her mind was preoccupied with her brother's upcoming surgery. She sat in the small staff breakroom, staring at a photo of her family, praying that she could just get through tomorrow night without any mistakes. She had no idea that a trap was already being set, waiting to snap shut around her.
