Chapter 4 - Setting the Stage

The Sterling Charity Gala was a dazzling spectacle of wealth and privilege. The mansion glowed with golden light, echoing with the sounds of string quartets and the clinking of crystal champagne flutes. Women wore gowns that cost more than Emily would make in a lifetime, and the air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and Cuban cigars.
Emily was stationed near the foyer, tirelessly taking coats and offering polite, practiced smiles to the guests. She felt entirely out of place, a ghost haunting a palace. Daniel was circulating among the guests, looking striking in a tailored tuxedo. Every so often, his eyes would cut through the crowd, briefly checking on Emily, making sure she wasn't being overwhelmed by the demanding attendees.
Vanessa watched this dynamic from the mezzanine, her blood boiling. Daniel had barely spoken to her all evening, brushing off her attempts to parade him in front of the press. It was time.
During a crescendo in the orchestra's performance, when the guests were distracted by an auction announcement in the main ballroom, Vanessa slipped away. She moved with practiced grace toward the security room, knowing exactly when the guards took their perimeter rounds. She didn't need to break in; she just needed to bypass the foyer long enough to access the display cases.

Using a key she had secretly copied from Margaret's study, Vanessa retrieved the diamond necklace. It felt heavy and cold in her hand. She slipped it into the deep pocket of her black silk dress and glided silently toward the staff corridor.
She spotted Emily’s worn, brown leather handbag sitting innocently on the shelf. With a quick glance over her shoulder, Vanessa unzipped the bag, dropped the dazzling diamonds inside, and zipped it back up. Her heart raced with the thrill of malice. The trap was set.
