Chapter 10 - The Choice

The boat bumped gently against the wooden pier.
Damian tied the ropes quickly and efficiently.
A black sedan was waiting at the end of the dock, its headlights off.
“Silas is driving,” Damian said. “He’s loyal to me. He’ll take you to the airport.”
Claire walked down into the cabin and gently picked up the sleeping Emma.
She carried her up the stairs.
Damian stood on the dock, watching them. He didn't reach out. He didn't try to touch them.
He was keeping his promise. He was letting them go.
Claire walked past him and laid Emma in the backseat of the sedan.
Silas gave her a respectful nod.
She closed the car door.
Damian stood by the boat, the wind pulling at his ruined coat.
“Goodbye, Claire.”
He turned around, preparing to walk back into the darkness alone.
“Stop.”
Damian froze.
Claire walked back toward him.
The anger she had carried for four years felt heavy, but suddenly, it felt useless.
“You think you can just decide what’s best for me again?” she asked, her voice shaking.
Damian turned back slowly.
“I’m giving you your freedom.”
“You don't get to hand me my freedom like a gift. It’s mine.”
She stopped inches away from him.
“You made a choice for me four years ago. You don't get to do it again.”
“Claire, I bring death wherever I go.”
“You said you left the syndicate. Did you mean it?”
“Yes.”
“Then prove it.”
She pointed to the car.
“Get in the car, Damian.”
He stared at her, completely stunned. The Mafia King, speechless once again.
“You’re asking me to come with you?”
“I’m telling you that Emma needs a father. And I…” She swallowed hard. “I am tired of doing this alone.”
Damian’s rough hand came up, hovering inches from her face.
May you like
She leaned into it.
He closed his eyes, resting his forehead against hers.
