Chapter 7 - The Traitor

Damian snatched the radio.

“Report.”

“It wasn't Thorne’s men in the truck,” Silas said. “It was ours.”

The room went dead silent.

Claire felt the blood drain from her face.

“Explain,” Damian demanded, his voice dangerously low.

“The guys we intercepted… they had Blackwood syndicate tattoos. Someone on the inside sold you out to Thorne.”

Damian stared at the wall.

His empire was fracturing.

“Who gave the order?”

“Still working on it. But they tracked your GPS. They know about the Nova Scotia house.”

“How far away are they?”

“Twenty minutes. You need to leave. Now.”

Damian dropped the radio.

He grabbed two duffel bags from the closet and threw one to Claire.

“Pack the food. Anything you can carry.”

“They’re coming here?” Claire panicked, rushing to the kitchen.

“We have an underground tunnel that leads to the marina. We’re taking the boat.”

He scooped Emma up in his arms.

Emma dropped her sandwich, but grabbed Mr. Buttons tightly.

“Are we playing a game?” she asked, sensing the urgency.

“Yes, little bird,” Damian said smoothly. “We have to be very quiet.”

Claire grabbed water bottles and shoved them into the bag.

A loud alarm blared through the cabin.

Red lights flashed from the security panel.

“They breached the outer gate,” Damian said. “They’re five minutes early.”

He pulled a bookshelf away from the wall, revealing a heavy steel door.

He punched in a code. The door hissed open, revealing a dark, damp staircase.

“Go,” he ordered Claire.

“What about you?”

“I have to initiate the lockdown sequence. It’ll buy you time.”

“Damian—”

“Go, Claire! Keep her safe!”

May you like

Claire grabbed Emma’s hand and ran down the stairs into the darkness.

Before the door closed, she saw Damian rack the slide of his gun, turning toward the front entrance.
