Chapter 9 - The Confession

They sped across the freezing water under the cover of night.
Damian drove the boat, navigating without lights to avoid detection.
Claire sat in the cabin below, wrapping a sleeping Emma in thermal blankets.
When Emma was settled, Claire climbed back up to the deck.
The wind whipped her hair across her face.
She looked at Damian. He looked exhausted, the adrenaline fading to leave only pain.
“Who betrayed you?” she asked.

He looked at her, his dark eyes pleading for the first time in his life.
“I spent four years watching you from the shadows, convincing myself you were better off without me. But when I saw that photo of Emma… I realized I was just a coward.”
“You hurt me, Damian. You broke me.”
“I know. And I don't expect you to forgive me.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
He didn't open it. He just held it out to her.
“This is your old wedding ring. I kept it.”
Claire looked at the box, her hands trembling.

“I don't want to trap you again,” he said softly. “When we get to shore, I have a car waiting. It will take you and Emma anywhere you want to go. Safely. I will disappear.”
Claire looked at the man who had ruined her life, and saved it.
