Chapter 5 - The Vulture Strikes from the Shadows

The miraculous breakthrough with Thomas changed the entire energetic frequency of the Castellano estate. Over the next week, the little boy’s vocabulary expanded from a single hesitant whisper into full, clear sentences, filling the cavernous marble halls with genuine childish laughter, bright chatter, and the sweet sound of life returning to a tomb.
Adrian was a completely transformed man. The cold, ruthless titan of real estate who terrified Wall Street was gone, replaced by a deeply devoted, patient father who spent every available second playing with his son on the living room rug alongside Clara.
However, outside the heavily guarded gates of the North Shore estate, the corporate wolves were closing in for the kill.
It was late Friday evening when the storm broke.
Adrian was in the nursery finishing up bedtime stories with Thomas while Clara prepared a light supper downstairs in the kitchen. Her phone buzzed aggressively on the marble counter.
It was an unknown number, but the area code was local. Clara swiped to answer.
"Miss Hartmann?" A sharp, unfamiliar female voice hissed through the speaker. "Listen very carefully. You need to pack your things and leave the Castellano estate tonight. Marcus Thorne knows everything about your background, your mother's massive medical debts, and your employment contract. He has already filed a forged financial audit alleging that you stole twenty thousand dollars from the estate accounts to pay off your mother's hospital bills. The police warrant is signed, and media vans are already heading toward the gates."
Clara's breath caught violently in her throat. The kitchen spun around her.
"That's a lie—I didn't touch a single cent—" Clara stammered, panic gripping her chest.
"It doesn't matter if it's true or false, Miss Hartmann," the voice snapped coldly. "Marcus controls the interim board, the local prosecutor's office, and half the media. If you're still in that house when the police arrive in twenty minutes, Adrian will be legally implicated for harboring a fugitive and shielding corporate embezzlement, and the board will legally strip him of his majority voting rights before sunrise. You love the boy? Then prove it. Walk out those gates right now and disappear."
The line went dead with a harsh click.
Clara stood paralyzed in the center of the warm kitchen. Her mind raced at a million miles an hour. She thought of her mother's mounting debts, the ruined house, her own desperate poverty—and then she looked up toward the grand staircase, remembering little Thomas's sweet voice saying her name, and Adrian's tear-streaked face as he held his son for the first time in a year and a half.
She couldn't let them destroy Adrian. She couldn't let Marcus win.
Without shedding a single tear, Clara walked quickly upstairs to her small staff room, grabbed her old, battered canvas suitcase, and threw her few clothes inside. She scribbled a quick, tear-stained note on a piece of notepaper, placing it squarely on the center of Adrian's expansive mahogany desk in his third-floor office:

Adrian, Thank you for letting me heal your family. Marcus is framing me for theft to destroy your voting shares and seize your empire. To protect you and Thomas, I have to walk away. Please don't look for me. Take care of your boy. — Clara
With her heart breaking into a million jagged pieces, Clara slipped quietly out the heavy back service doors of the estate, stepping out into the freezing, snow-swept Chicago night just as flashing red and blue police lights began to illuminate the dark, winding private driveway.
