Chapter 7 - The Midnight Rescue and the Ultimate Trap

Clara shivered violently, her cheap boots sinking deep into the wet, freezing snow as she trudged aimlessly down the deserted North Shore road, far away from the safety of the Castellano gates.

Her hands were frozen stiff inside her thin woolen pockets. Her tears had long since frozen into icy tracks down her reddened cheeks. She had nowhere to go, no money left for a hotel, and no way to contact her sick mother without leading the corporate vultures straight to her family's doorstep.

Suddenly, the harsh beam of high-intensity headlights cut through the heavy falling snow ahead of her.

A sleek, black armored SUV slid smoothly to a halt right beside her on the desolate road. The heavy passenger door flew open instantly.

Before Clara could even turn to run, two burly men in dark tactical gear stepped out. But before they could grab her, a tall, imposing figure vaulted out from the backseat—his long dark coat billowing behind him in the freezing wind, his face carved from pure, unyielding granite.

Adrian.

Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat as he sprinted across the snowy pavement toward her, looking like a man who had just clawed his way back from the gates of the underworld.

"Clara!" Adrian shouted over the howling wind, his voice cracking with raw, desperate emotion.

Before she could utter a single word, Adrian reached her, grabbed her shoulders with trembling hands, and pulled her violently against his chest, wrapping his massive, warm arms around her so tightly that she couldn't breathe.

"You stupid, brave, stubborn woman," Adrian sobbed into her wet hair, his voice breaking completely. "Did you really think I would let you walk away and take the blame for a crime that bastard Marcus manufactured?"

"Adrian... the police... the board..." Clara choked out against his chest, tears hot and fast spilling over. "They were going to ruin you..."

"Let them try," Adrian whispered fiercely, pulling back just enough to frame her freezing face in his large, warm hands, staring down into her eyes with a fierce, burning intensity that defied the freezing winter storm. "Marcus is currently sitting in a holding cell at Chicago PD facing federal wire fraud, extortion, and corporate forgery charges. My security team decrypted his private servers twenty minutes after you left. He's finished. Castellano Real Estate is secure. But none of that matters to me, Clara. None of it."

He leaned down slowly, his dark eyes searching hers for permission, his heart hammering wildly against his ribs.

"From the very first second you walked into my office and stood up to my grief, you breathed life back into a dead man," Adrian murmured, his voice thick with undeniable love. "Don't ever try to protect me by walking away again. Stay with me. Stay with us. Marry me, Clara. Help me raise my son, and let me spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to work another brutal day in the cold."

Clara stared up at him through her tears, the freezing snow swirling around them like white confetti, feeling the absolute, unbreakable truth of his words echoing deep within her soul.

She reached up, her cold fingers resting softly against his stubbled cheek, and smiled through her tears.

"Yes," Clara whispered softly. "I'll stay."

Adrian pulled her in and kissed her—deeply, passionately, and fiercely—sealing their fate right there in the freezing Chicago snow as his security team respectfully turned their backs to give them privacy.
