Chapter 4 - Stripped of the Crown

Julian stood frozen on the DJ stage as the reality of his total downfall settled into his marrow.

The remaining guests were no longer lingering out of curiosity; they were scurrying toward the front driveway like rats abandoning a sinking galleon.

Whispers of "embezzlement," "fraud," and "fake wealth" floated through the humid evening air as car engines began roaring to life outside.

Evelyn attempted to climb the stairs to console her son, but the security guard positioned at the base held up a firm, gloved hand.

"Ma'am, please step back," the guard stated neutrally.

"The property owner has revoked all guest privileges effective immediately."

"Owner?" Evelyn sputtered, her voice trembling with indignation.

"I am Julian's mother! I have a suite in this house!"

"You had a guest bedroom, Evelyn," I corrected her as I stepped down from the platform, my voice devoid of any warmth.

"A guest bedroom that I personally furnished while your son was lying about his quarterly dividends."

"Your luggage has already been packed and placed neatly beside the front entryway."

"You and Julian can share an Uber to whatever budget motel fits within your personal pension."

Julian finally snapped out of his catatonic trance and rushed down the stairs, nearly tripping over his own boat shoes.

"Claire, look at me!" he begged, reaching out to grasp my arm.

The guard stepped in seamlessly between us, placing a solid forearm against Julian's chest and halting his momentum.

"Do not touch Mrs. Vance, sir," the guard instructed, his tone cold and official.

Julian looked past the guard’s broad shoulder, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with a frantic panic I had never seen before.

"Claire, please, think about the children!" he pleaded, shamelessly trying to weaponize the babies he had ignored for two years.

"Chloe needs her father! Liam needs his dad in the house!"

"Liam asked me three days ago why Daddy smells like expensive bourbon and sleeps until two in the afternoon," I answered, looking him dead in the eye.

"You haven't changed a single diaper for Chloe since she was discharged from the hospital."

"You were too busy buying rounds of top-shelf tequila at the country club to project an image of success."

"Do not dare use my children as a human shield for your cowardice."

Victoria Sterling stepped down behind me, checking her diamond wristwatch with a sharp, professional glance.

"You have fourteen minutes remaining, Mr. Vance," Victoria announced dryly.

"After that, the local precinct will assist in your physical removal for civil trespass."

Julian looked around the sprawling backyard, which had been his personal playground for the last two years.

The string lights swayed gently in the breeze, illuminating the half-empty glasses of champagne and abandoned platters of imported oysters.

Everything he had used to construct his fragile, narcissistic kingdom was dissolving into thin air.

Realizing that begging was useless, Julian turned his fury into a final, pathetic display of spite.

"You think you won, Claire?" he hissed, his lips pulling back over his teeth in a grotesque snarl.

"Look at you! You're an exhausted, dried-up corporate workhorse!"

"No man is ever going to look at you with desire again!"

"I looked at Selina because she is what a real, desirable woman looks like, not some glorified office manager in a ruined swimsuit!"

The venom in his words would have shattered me six months ago.

Tonight, it was nothing more than the buzzing of an insignificant fly.

"Julian," I said calmly, stepping forward so that only a few inches separated our faces.

"Selina didn't even look back at you when she walked out that gate."

"She looked at you the exact same way everyone else here looked at you tonight: with pure, unadulterated pity."

"The difference between me and Selina is that she depends on Marcus's tolerance, while I own the ground beneath your feet."

"Now go get your duffel bag before I have the security team throw your designer suits into the pool."

Julian choked on his own bile, unable to find a single retort that could wound me.

He turned on his heel and stormed toward the French doors leading into the main house, followed closely by the second security guard.

Evelyn let out a high-pitched sob, clutching her designer handbag against her stomach as she stumbled down the driveway after Marcus.

The vast backyard was suddenly empty, save for the hired waitstaff who stood awkwardly near the service tents, unsure whether to keep clearing plates.

"Pack everything into take-away containers and take it home to your families," I told the catering crew with a warm smile.

"You will all receive your full wages plus a fifty percent bonus directly from my account tonight."

The staff members looked at each other in relief, thanking me profusely before quickly getting to work.

I turned to Victoria, who was tucking the legal files back into her leather briefcase.

"The temporary restraining order is already filed for tomorrow morning, Claire," Victoria said, offering an approving nod.

"He won't be able to come within five hundred feet of this estate, your office, or the children's preschool."

"Thank you, Victoria," I said quietly, feeling the cool night air brush against my bare shoulders.

For the first time in two years, the suffocating weight on my chest was completely gone.

I was breathing clean, uncompromised air.

Then, the heavy sound of Julian’s duffel bag hitting the driveway gravel signaled that the final act had begun.
