Chapter 9 - The Desperate Ambush

Two days after the birthday pool party, I stepped out of the private elevator into the marble lobby of Vance Risk Advisory.

I was dressed in a tailored navy-blue trousersuit, a silk ivory blouse, and classic four-inch Louboutin heels.

My hair was styled in sleek, polished waves, and a subtle touch of crimson lipstick accentuated my confident smile.

The exhausting weight of catering to an ungrateful man-child had completely lifted from my shoulders.

In forty-eight hours of pure freedom, my natural vitality, executive sharpness, and undeniable elegance had returned in full force.

My executive assistants and senior analysts greeted me with respectful smiles as I walked through the glass-paneled corridors.

They knew that their founder and managing director was back in absolute control of her corporate domain.

"Claire, your ten o'clock portfolio review is set up in the main boardroom," Hannah reported, walking beside me with an iPad.

"The private investigators have also sent their first tracking update on Julian."

"Where is he?" I asked, adjusting my cuff.

"He spent the last two nights crashing on a pull-out sofa in an associate’s bachelor apartment downtown," Hannah replied.

"He spent yesterday afternoon visiting three different high-end litigation firms trying to find someone to take his divorce case on contingency."

"Every single senior partner turned him down within ten minutes of reviewing your postnuptial agreement."

"They told him his claim was frivolous and warned him he risked counter-suits for fraud and embezzlement."

I allowed a faint, satisfied smirk to grace my lips.

"Julian always believed lawyers were like magicians who could conjure money out of thin air," I said.

"He fails to understand that contracts signed under full disclosure with independent legal representation are bulletproof."

As we rounded the corner toward the main executive reception area, a sudden commotion broke out near the double security doors.

"I am the co-founder of this firm! Get your hands off me!" a harsh, frantic voice bellowed from the entryway.

I stepped into the reception foyer and stopped dead in my tracks.

Julian was wrestling against two private security guards who had him pinned firmly against the glass partition.

He looked utterly unhinged.

He was wearing the same rumpled designer shirt from two days ago, now visibly stained with sweat and cheap takeout grease.

His stubble was patchy, his hair was greasy and uncombed, and his eyes were bloodshot with wild, desperate panic.

When his gaze locked onto me, his mouth dropped open in absolute, stunned disbelief.

He looked at my tailored suit, my flawless makeup, and the undeniable aura of wealth and authority radiating from my presence.

The tired, worn-out woman in the faded swimsuit he had publicly humiliated was nowhere to be found.

Standing before him was a breathtaking, untouchable corporate titan who held his entire destiny in her hands.

"Claire...?" Julian gasped, his voice cracking with sheer bewilderment.

"Release him to the center of the lobby," I instructed the guards calmly.

The security team stepped back, though their hands remained poised on their utility belts.

Julian stumbled forward two steps, instinctively smoothing down his filthy shirt, suddenly painfully aware of his own disheveled appearance.

"Claire... look at you," Julian stammered, his eyes roving over my figure with an uncomfortable mix of lust and humiliation.

"You look... you look incredible."

"I look like a woman who is no longer carrying the crushing deadweight of an arrogant parasite, Julian," I responded, my tone ice-cold.

"What are you doing in my corporate headquarters?"

Julian swallowed hard, taking a tentative step closer before glancing nervously at the security guards.

"Claire, we have to stop this madness," he begged, dropping all pretenses of his former arrogance.

"I made a mistake, okay? I made a stupid, drunken joke at the party!"

"I was showing off in front of Marcus and the guys! Men say dumb things when they drink, Claire! You know how it is!"

"A drunken joke?" I echoed, stepping forward with deliberate authority.

"You stood in front of sixty people and announced that another woman was more worthy of desire than the mother of your children."

"You belittled my body after I spent nine months carrying our daughter while funding your entire existence."

"That wasn't a joke, Julian. That was your true, ugly heart on full display."

Julian dropped to his knees right there on the polished marble floor of the reception lobby, uncaring that my staff was watching through the glass walls.

"Claire, please! I have nothing!" he wept, clasping his trembling hands together in front of his chest.

"Nobody will give me a meeting! Marcus won't take my calls! My mother won't speak to me!"

"I don't have five hundred dollars to my name! I'm sleeping on an old futon!"

"Take me back, Claire! I'll do whatever you want! I'll stay home! I'll do the chores! Just don't destroy my life!"

I looked down at the man who had once sneered at my exhaustion, feeling nothing in my heart except a profound sense of closure.

"You destroyed your own life, Julian, one lie at a time," I told him, looking down into his tear-streaked face.

"And the only reason you want to come back is because you finally realized that the person who gave you status, wealth, and security was never you."

"It was always me."

"Hannah, call the building marshal and have this trespasser escorted directly to the county lockup."

May you like

Julian screamed and flailed as the guards lifted him off the floor, his desperate cries echoing down the hall as the elevator doors closed between us.

The king was finally behind bars.
