Chapter 7 - The Brother’s Awakening

Marcus stepped into my sunlit living room with his head hanging low, his usual cocksure swagger completely shattered.
He was wearing a rumpled polo shirt and casual shorts, looking like a man who hadn't slept a single minute through the long night.
His eyes darted nervously around the magnificent architectural space, taking in the vaulted ceilings and the curated artwork.
Just yesterday, he had believed Julian bought this palatial estate with the massive profits of an elite tech fund.
Now, standing on the polished hardwood, he looked like an intruder in a foreign temple.
"Claire," Marcus began, his voice raw, hoarse, and laced with genuine discomfort.
"I... I came to apologize."
"Sit down, Marcus," I said, gesturing toward the cream leather armchair opposite the fireplace.
I remained standing, leaning casually against the mantelpiece with my arms crossed over my silk robe.
Marcus swallowed hard, slowly lowering himself onto the very edge of the cushion as if he feared the leather would burn him.
"I feel like the biggest fool on the planet," Marcus mumbled, running both hands over his weary face.
"Last night at the pool... when Julian was talking about Selina, and making those disgusting comments about your body..."
"I laughed because I thought it was just locker room banter, Claire."
"I thought Julian was on top of the world, running multi-million-dollar deals, while you were just going through some postpartum blues."
"I had no idea he was living off your blood, sweat, and tears."
I looked at him with an unyielding, piercing gaze that made him shrink even further into the chair.
"You laughed because it was easy, Marcus," I stated without raising my voice.
"You laughed because Julian spent two years building an image of the untouchable patriarch while tearing down the woman keeping him alive."
"You sat at my dining table every Sunday, eating food I bought, drinking wine I paid for, and praising Julian for his generosity."
"Did you ever once ask how I was managing ten-hour workdays with a toddler and a newborn baby upstairs?"
Marcus bowed his head, unable to meet my eyes.
"No," he whispered softly. "I didn't. And I was completely wrong."
"Selina was so shaken last night that she packed her bags and went to stay with her parents."
"She said she refuses to be used as a prop in Julian’s sick, twisted dynamic anymore."
"She felt cheapened, Claire. Julian was staring at her like an object just to make you feel worthless."
I let out a cold, breathy chuckle.
"Selina is smart to put distance between herself and this family," I said.
"Because Julian wasn't just using her image to humiliate me, Marcus."
"He was actively setting you up to take the fall for his next massive fraud."
Marcus snapped his head up, his eyes widening in pure shock.
"What? What are you talking about?"
I nodded to Hannah, who walked over and placed a thick, blue legal binder directly onto the glass coffee table in front of Marcus.
"Open it to tab four," I instructed.
Marcus’s hands trembled as he flipped open the binder.
His eyes scanned the top page, and within five seconds, the remaining color drained from his face until he was ghost-white.
"This is a commercial loan application..." Marcus stammered, his voice climbing an octave.
"Under my architectural consultancy’s corporate name!"
"And look at the signature on the personal guarantor line, Marcus," I said coldly.
Marcus turned the page, his breath catching in his throat with an audible gasp.
"That's my signature... but I never signed this!" Marcus cried out, springing to his feet in panic.
"I never applied for a six-hundred-thousand-dollar expansion loan!"
"Julian forged your digital notary stamp two weeks ago," I revealed, stepping toward him with measured, calculated grace.
"He used your firm’s clean credit rating to secure short-term mezzanine financing."
"He told the lenders the funds would be directed toward a joint development project between your company and his imaginary fund."
"The money was scheduled to clear into his offshore holding account this coming Friday."
"Had I not frozen his corporate accounts and revoked his digital signing keys yesterday afternoon, you would have been personally liable for over half a million dollars by next month."
Marcus fell back into the armchair, his knees giving out beneath him.
He stared at the forged documents in absolute horror, the full realization of his brother's parasitic nature crashing down upon him.
"He was going to ruin me..." Marcus whispered, tears of betrayal welling up in his eyes.
"My own brother was going to destroy my business just to fund his country club lifestyle."
"Julian doesn't have a brother, Marcus," I replied, leaning over the table and looking directly into his soul.
"Julian only has marks, accomplices, and victims."
May you like
"Last night, I took myself off his victim list permanently."
"Now, the only question that remains is: are you going to help me bury his fraud, or are you going to let him drag you down with him?"
