Chapter 4 - The First Domino Falls

The silence on the patio was broken only by the hum of the refrigerator inside the house and the distant drone of traffic on the coastal highway. Ivan stood staring at Arthur Vance, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

“You’re firing me?” Ivan whispered, the words sounding alien in his mouth as if the concept of consequence had never applied to him. “Arthur, I brought in the Pacific Ridge contract. I secured the downtown high-rise zoning. Without me, Vanguard loses half its portfolio!”

“Without you, Vanguard avoids a federal indictment for securities fraud,” Arthur corrected him coldly, turning his back on Ivan to look at me. “Elena, the board was scheduled to meet on Tuesday. But considering you hold the majority voting bloc, we can convene right now, right here.”

“No,” Ivan roared, lunging forward with his fists clenched. “You can’t do this! This is my house! My company!”

Before Ivan could reach us, two of his own handpicked security guards—men he paid to protect his events—stepped forward and blocked his path, their arms crossed. They had spent the last hour watching Ivan humiliate me, and more importantly, they had heard Arthur Vance confirm who actually signed their paychecks.

“Mr. Vance,” the head guard said flatly, looking at me instead of Ivan. “Do you want us to escort Mr. Vance off the premises?”

“Not yet, Marcus,” I said, stepping forward until I stood just inches from my husband. The pain in my burned palm throbbed violently, but every pulse of agony only reinforced my resolve. “Let him stay long enough to pack his designer golf clubs. He’s going to need them when he tries to check into a motel tonight.”

Ivan’s eyes widened with pure malice. “You think a piece of paper makes you untouchable? I’ll sue you for every penny. I’ll drag you through family court until you’re bankrupt!”

“Go ahead and try, Ivan,” I said, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen to play a crystal-clear audio recording.

“Just sign the transfer papers, Elena, or I swear I’ll make sure your name is ruined across this entire county,” Ivan’s recorded voice boomed across the silent patio, captured by the hidden mic I had worn on my lapel for the past six months. “You’re nothing without my name.”

Cynthia covered her mouth with her hand, gasping as the recording continued to play, exposing every threat, every late-night intimidation, and every illegal financial maneuver Ivan had ever boasted about in the dark.
