Chapter 8 - The Unraveling of Cynthia Vance

While Ivan was being physically locked out of his corporate empire, his mother Cynthia was discovering that her own gilded cage had been bolted from the outside.

Following the disastrous barbecue, Cynthia had returned to her sprawling suburban estate—a property purchased entirely with funds from the Elena Vance Trust—expecting her housekeeper to draw her bath and prepare her evening tea. Instead, she found her smart-lock keycodes deactivated, the security gates locked tight, and a notice of eviction taped firmly to the front glass doors.

“What is the meaning of this? Open this door immediately!” Cynthia shrieked into the video intercom by the driveway, her voice trembling with indignant fury as she banged her jeweled hand against the steel pillar.

The intercom crackled, and instead of her frightened housekeeper, my voice came through the speaker.

“The lease on your lifestyle has expired, Cynthia,” I said calmly from my office downtown.

“You insolent little—” Cynthia choked on her own outrage, her face turning purple under the afternoon sun. “My son is the head of Vanguard Development! He will have you thrown in prison by nightfall!”

“Your son spent the morning being dragged out of his own boardroom by building security,” I replied evenly. “And this house, along with the luxury car parked in your driveway, is registered under the Elena Vance Trust. You have two hours to remove your personal belongings before the movers arrive to pack the rest into storage.”

“You can’t do this to me! I am a Vance!” she screamed, slamming her fist against the intercom camera.

“No, Cynthia,” I said, cutting off the feed. “You were a parasite living on my capital. Pack your bags.”

Two hours later, as the moving truck pulled up to the gates, Cynthia was forced to drag her designer luggage down the gravel driveway, her expensive heels clicking against the pavement under the stares of the neighbors who had eaten her catered food just the day before. The illusion of untouchable wealth had vanished, leaving behind only the cold reality of a family that had spent a decade consuming others without ever building anything of their own.

Ivan tried calling her from a burner phone while she sat waiting for a taxi on the curb, but she didn’t answer. For the first time in their lives, neither of them had anyone left to blame but each other.
