Chapter 5 - Exile from the Kingdom

The audio recording echoed off the stone walls of the patio, stripping away the last remaining shreds of Ivan’s dignity. The executives and golf partners who had spent a decade flattering him began slowly backing away toward their luxury sedans parked along the circular driveway.

“Turn that off!” Ivan shouted, lunging at my phone, but Marcus the security guard intercepted him with a heavy hand against Ivan’s chest, planting him firmly back onto the scorched grass.

“Touch her again, and you won’t just be losing your job, Mr. Vance,” Marcus warned, his voice low and uncompromising.

“You’re all traitors!” Cynthia shrieked, grabbing her son’s arm and glaring at the retreating guests. “Do you know who my family is? You’ll never work in this city again!”

“Cynthia, shut up,” Ivan hissed, finally realizing that shouting threats was no longer working. He turned back to me, his expression shifting from blind rage to a desperate, pathetic pleading. “Elena... please. Let’s talk inside. We’ve been married ten years. We can fix this. It was just a mistake—the heat, the drinking—”

“Ten years, Ivan,” I interrupted, my voice devoid of emotion, cold as polished steel. “Ten years of standing behind you while you took the bows. Ten years of carrying the luggage, swallowing the insults, and watching you forge my signatures on corporate documents while I stayed silent to protect a marriage that only ever existed to serve your ego.”

“I was stressed,” he whispered, taking a half-step forward, his eyes watery. “I made mistakes.”

“You didn’t make mistakes, Ivan. You made choices. And for eighteen months, I made choices too.” I lifted my hand, the blistered skin stark against the afternoon light. “This was your final choice. Now live with mine.”

I turned to Arthur Vance. “Let’s call an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at nine. We have an executive restructuring to finalize, and I want Ivan’s office cleared out before midnight.”

“Consider it done, Elena,” Arthur said, offering a respectful nod before walking toward his car.

As the luxury vehicles began peeling out of the driveway one by one, leaving black rubber marks on the asphalt, Ivan stood alone in the center of the ruined barbecue, staring at the empty street. His empire hadn’t fallen because of an accident; it had collapsed because he never bothered to look beneath the surface of the woman he thought he owned.
