Chapter 4 - The Federal Trap

The federal agents did not wait in the lobby.

By the time Mila and Thomas descended from the thirty-fifth floor, two men in identical charcoal suits and trench coats were already waiting outside the private executive elevators on the main floor.

Their badges were displayed openly on their lapels. Federal Bureau of Investigation, White-Collar Crime Division.

The taller of the two, an older man with sharp gray hair and tired eyes named Special Agent Vance—no relation to Arthur, though the coincidence felt too neat to be accidental—stepped forward as the elevator doors parted.

“Mila Hart?” the agent asked, his voice flat and practiced.

Mila froze, her hand instinctively tightening against the strap of her leather tote bag. Beside her, Thomas didn't move an inch. He stood with his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets, his posture relaxed, yet radiating an aura of lethal containment.

“I’m Special Agent Miller,” the agent continued, flashing a badge before slipping it back into his coat. “We have a federal warrant for your detainment regarding the unauthorized exfiltration of proprietary data from Meridian Holdings.”

The words hung in the sterile, marble-floored lobby like a death sentence.

Around them, a few lingering administrative assistants and junior executives scattered toward the exits, eager to distance themselves from the unfolding disaster.

Mila’s breath hitched. She opened her mouth to speak, but before a single sound could escape her lips, Thomas stepped smoothly into her line of sight, blocking the agents from getting any closer.

“Special Agent Miller,” Thomas said, his voice cutting through the ambient hum of the lobby with effortless authority. “I believe there has been a administrative misunderstanding. Miss Hart is a full-time employee of Crane International, and any inquiries regarding her previous employment must go through my legal counsel first.”

Agent Miller didn't flinch. He met Thomas’s cold gaze with stubborn resilience.

“With all due respect, Mr. Crane, this isn’t an administrative inquiry. This is a federal criminal warrant issued by a magistrate judge in the Southern District of New York. We have digital forensic evidence linking Miss Hart’s personal encrypted signature to the corporate breach at Meridian.”

Thomas tilted his head slightly. “Evidence provided by Arthur Vance, no doubt?”

“Evidence verified by our cyber-crime unit,” Miller corrected smoothly. “Whether Arthur Vance handed it to us or we pulled it from a server doesn't change the facts. Miss Hart is coming with us for questioning.”

Mila felt the floor shift beneath her feet. The nightmare she had tried to outrun in Venice, the secret she had buried under layers of corporate anonymity, had finally caught up with her.

She looked at Thomas, expecting to see the cold calculation of a businessman cutting his losses. He had only known her for three days as a stranger in Venice, and for less than twenty-four hours as an employee. He had no logical reason to protect her from a federal indictment.

Instead, Thomas’s expression darkened into something terrifyingly absolute.

“She isn't going anywhere with you, Agent,” Thomas said quietly.

Miller’s eyes narrowed. “Are you obstructing a federal investigation, Mr. Crane? Because I assure you, we have the authority to bring you in as an accessory as well.”

“You have a warrant to detain Miss Hart for questioning,” Thomas replied, his voice dropping into a low, measured register that made the hair on the back of Mila’s arms stand up. “You do not have extradition rights out of this building without my legal team reviewing the jurisdiction. And as of forty seconds ago, my general counsel has filed an emergency motion to quash that warrant based on procedural misconduct by the issuing magistrate.”

Miller blinked, visibly caught off guard. “That’s impossible. We just served the writ.”

“My lawyers work faster than yours, Agent,” Thomas said calmly, pulling a sleek black smartphone from his pocket. He tapped the screen once and held it up. “In fact, Judge Holloway signed the stay three minutes ago. Feel free to call your precinct and verify it.”

Miller stared at Thomas, his jaw working as he processed the checkmate. He looked past Thomas at Mila, his expression laced with reluctant frustration.

“This isn't over, Miss Hart,” Miller muttered, signaling his partner to step back. “You can run behind Mr. Crane’s corporate shield all you want, but those files are coming out, and when they do, you’ll be sitting in a federal penitentiary.”

With a final hostile glare, the two federal agents turned on their heel and headed toward the glass revolving doors of the lobby.

The moment they were gone, the heavy tension in the room remained thick enough to choke on.

Mila let out a long, shuddering breath she didn't realize she’d been holding. Her knees felt weak, and she had to grip the edge of the marble reception desk to keep from swaying.

“You didn't have to do that,” she whispered, looking up at Thomas. “If the warrant was valid, you could have just let them take me. It would have saved you a corporate war with Meridian.”

Thomas turned slowly, his dark eyes fixing on hers with an intensity that felt physical.

“Do you take me for a fool, Mila?” he asked, his voice dangerously low.

“What?”

“You think I spent millions acquiring the remaining shares of Meridian’s European debt just to let some mid-level federal agent walk out of my building with my best analyst?” Thomas stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Mila could feel the heat radiating off his chest.

“Your best analyst?” she echoed, her voice trembling slightly. “You said my work was merely adequate an hour ago.”

“Your work is adequate,” Thomas corrected smoothly, a faint, wicked smirk touching the corner of his lips. “Your survival instincts, however, are exceptional.”

He reached out, his long fingers curling around her wrist, his grip firm, steady, and inescapable.

“Come with me.”

“Where?”

“My car is waiting downstairs,” Thomas said, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute finality. “We are going to my private estate outside the city. Because if you stay in your apartment tonight, Arthur Vance won’t send federal agents. He’ll send someone much worse.”

Mila looked up into his face. She knew he was right. The moment the federal warrant failed, Arthur would resort to darker, more permanent measures.

She had two choices: run alone and be hunted down within twenty-four hours, or put her life directly into the hands of the man she had kissed in the dark in Venice.

She let out a quiet breath, nodded once, and allowed Thomas Crane to lead her out into the storm.
