Chapter 9 - The Final Boardroom Execution

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, painting the glass towers of the Crane International Building in streaks of cold gold and gray.
Inside the executive boardroom on the thirty-second floor, the atmosphere was thick enough to suffocate.
The mahogany table was surrounded by members of the board of directors, all whispering frantically among themselves. At the far end sat Julian Vance and his older brother Arthur, both wearing immaculate suits, their expressions a mask of arrogant triumph.
Arthur checked his gold Patek Philippe watch, a thin, cruel smirk playing across his lips.
“It’s 8:55 a.m., gentlemen,” Arthur announced, raising his voice so it echoed across the silent room. “Mr. Crane is five minutes late for his own emergency board meeting. Given that his private residence was target-cleared by federal security elements last night due to harboring a fugitive, I move that we vote to strip him of his CEO status immediately.”
Several board members murmured in agreement, glancing nervously toward the empty seat at the head of the table.
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his ankles. “It’s unfortunate, really. Thomas always was a brilliant strategist. He just didn't know when he was out of his depth.”
The heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked open.
Absolute silence fell over the room instantly.
Thomas Crane walked inside.
He didn't look like a man whose home had been invaded by mercenaries twelve hours earlier. His dark charcoal suit was impeccably tailored, his stride unhurried, his posture radiating an absolute, suffocating aura of command.
And walking right beside him, holding a sleek matte-black leather portfolio, was Mila Hart.
She wore a sharp, tailored navy pantsuit, her head held high, her expression calm and completely devoid of fear. She took a seat at the assistant’s chair near the head of the table, opening her portfolio with steady, precise fingers.
Arthur Vance’s smirk vanished instantly. He half-rose from his chair, his pale blue eyes widening in sheer disbelief.
“You...” Arthur sputtered, staring at Thomas and Mila as if they were ghosts. “How are you—?”
“Sit down, Arthur,” Thomas interrupted, his voice low, controlled, and utterly lethal. He walked slowly to the head of the table, resting his palms lightly on the back of his chair, but he didn't sit down.
“You’re trespassing, Thomas,” Julian snapped, standing up to address the board. “This man is under federal investigation for corporate espionage, and his associate is a fugitive who stole Meridian’s proprietary data! Look at them! They should be in handcuffs!”
Thomas didn't blink. He simply reached out and tapped a small silver remote on the table.
Behind the board members, the massive floor-to-ceiling projection screen flickered to life.
It didn't display corporate earnings projections or merger forecasts.
Instead, it displayed a live, streaming interface of the Federal Grand Jury portal, paired with a public ledger of encrypted offshore wire transfers, dummy corporations in the Cayman Islands, and signed compliance evasion memos bearing Arthur Vance’s personal electronic signature.
“What is that?” a board member gasped, leaning forward in horror.
“That,” Thomas said smoothly, his eyes locking onto Arthur and Julian with the cold fury of an executioner, “is the complete financial autopsy of Meridian Holdings. Every shell company, every tax fraud scheme, every bribe paid to offshore regulatory bodies over the past fifteen years.”
Arthur’s face drained of all color. He lunged across the table toward the screen. “Turn that off! It’s forged! It’s all corporate sabotage!”
“It’s not forged, Arthur,” a calm, synthesized voice echoed through the boardroom’s integrated speaker system.
The wall-mounted display switched to a secure video conference feed.
The seal of the United States Department of Justice glowed on the screen, accompanied by the stern, unsmiling face of Assistant U.S. Attorney General Miller.
“This is the Department of Justice,” the federal prosecutor announced clearly across the room. “We have received and authenticated the complete digital ledger provided by Crane International’s legal audit team, decrypted by Miss Mila Hart.”
Julian Vance stumbled backward, his chair scraping violently against the floor as he stared at the screen in abject terror.
“At 9:01 a.m. this morning,” the prosecutor continued, “federal indictments were issued for Arthur Vance and Julian Vance on charges of racketeering, tax evasion, and corporate manslaughter. Federal marshals are currently securing all Meridian properties nationwide.”
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members shouted over each other, papers flew, and panic set in like wildfire.
Arthur Vance turned a furious, mottled shade of purple, his eyes darting toward Thomas with pure, unadulterated murderous intent.
“You bastard!” Arthur screamed, lunging around the table toward Thomas. “You planned this from the very beginning! You used her to destroy us!”
Before Arthur could take two steps, the heavy boardroom doors blew open again.
Four armed federal marshals rushed inside, instantly pinning Arthur and Julian against the mahogany table, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around their wrists with sharp, metallic clicks.
“Arthur Vance, Julian Vance, you are under arrest,” the lead marshal announced coldly, reading them their rights as they struggled against the federal agents.
As the Vances were dragged out of the boardroom in disgrace, screaming curses that echoed down the hallway, absolute silence descended upon the room once more.
Thomas remained standing at the head of the table. He didn't celebrate. He didn't smile.
He slowly turned his head, his dark, fathomless eyes finding Mila across the table.
She met his gaze, feeling the last remaining weight of her past, her fears, and her secrets lift away entirely.
The war was over.
Thomas walked slowly around the table, stopping right beside her chair. He reached down, offering his hand, palm up.
Mila looked at his hand for a second, then placed her fingers in his, letting him pull her up to her feet until she was standing right against him in front of the silent, stunned board of directors.

Thomas looked down at her, the sharp edges of his ruthless exterior melting away into something fierce, possessive, and entirely real.
“Meeting adjourned,” Thomas said quietly, never breaking eye contact with Mila as he led her out of the room.
