Chapter 6 - Secrets in the Library

The interior of Thomas’s estate was a masterclass in quiet, intimidating luxury.

High vaulted ceilings supported by dark wooden beams arched over a cavernous living room dominated by a massive stone fireplace where a real fire crackled, casting dancing amber shadows across minimalist art pieces and towering bookshelves.

There were no servants in sight, no bustling staff. The house was entirely silent, save for the steady patter of rain against the reinforced glass windows and the muffled ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.

Mila stood near the entrance, her damp coat hugging her shoulders, feeling entirely out of place in the opulent space.

Thomas walked over to a built-in wet bar near the library archway, pouring two glasses of scotch without looking back.

“Take off your coat,” he instructed over his shoulder, his voice echoing slightly in the vast room. “You’ll catch a chill, and I need you fully functional for what comes next.”

Mila hesitated for a second, then slid her wet coat off, draping it over the back of a velvet armchair. She walked slowly toward the fireplace, holding her hands out toward the warmth, feeling the bone-deep chill from the rainy drive slowly recede.

Thomas walked up behind her silently, holding out a crystal tumbler filled with dark amber liquid.

She took it from his hand, their fingers brushing briefly. The skin-to-skin contact sent a sharp, involuntary jolt through her nervous system.

“Drink it,” Thomas commanded gently, taking a sip from his own glass. “You’ll need the courage.”

Mila took a small sip. The whiskey burned hot and clean down her throat, settling into her stomach with a heavy, warming weight. She turned to face him, leaning back slightly against the stone hearth.

“You mentioned what comes next,” she said, her voice steadying. “Arthur Vance isn't going to just give up because a federal warrant got quashed by a judge. What is he going to do?”

Thomas set his glass down on a nearby mahogany table, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute seriousness.

“Arthur isn't just a corporate executive, Mila. His family’s roots run deep in Sicilian private equity and logistics networks. When legal channels fail, men like Arthur rely on leverage of a different kind.”

“Intimidation,” Mila finished quietly. “Or worse.”

“Or worse,” Thomas agreed, stepping closer until he was standing right in front of her. The heat of the fire wrapped around them, creating a suffocating bubble of absolute isolation from the rest of the world. “Which is why you are not leaving this estate until I dismantle Meridian’s infrastructure piece by piece.”

“You’re going to destroy them?” Mila asked, her eyes widening slightly.

“I’m going to finish what I started in Venice,” Thomas replied, his voice dropping into a low, lethal purr. “When I bought their debt portfolio, I didn't just buy their liabilities. I bought their contracts, their offshore accounts, and their darkest operational secrets. All I needed was the final verification piece—the missing file that proves Arthur and his brother have been funneling illicit funds through shell corporations for the last decade.”

Mila’s breath caught in her throat. She looked up at him, the horrifying, exhilarating truth dawning on her all at once.

“The token,” she whispered. “The token I downloaded before I resigned from London. You didn't just bring me here because you wanted to protect me. You brought me here because I’m the only one who has the decryption key to unlock the files you bought.”

Thomas didn't deny it. A slow, knowing smile touched his lips, devoid of pretense or deception.

“You were always the missing piece of the puzzle, Mila,” he murmured, reaching out to gently brush a stray strand of dark hair away from her cheek. His thumb lingered against her jawline, his touch both a caress and a shackle. “In Venice, I didn't know who you were. I just felt drawn to you. But when I found your resume on my desk yesterday morning, I realized the universe had handed me the exact weapon I needed to destroy the Vances.”

Mila’s heart hammered against her ribs. She should have pulled away. She should have screamed, walked out the front door into the rain, and taken her chances with the federal agents.

Instead, she leaned slightly into his hand, her gaze locked onto his dark, consuming eyes.

“And what happens to me when this is over, Thomas?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly with a mixture of fear and reckless desire. “Once Meridian is dismantled, once Arthur is ruined... what am I to you?”

Thomas lowered his head slowly, his breath warm against her lips, his gaze burning with an intensity that promised absolute ruin or absolute salvation.

“You were my carnival date,” Thomas whispered, his voice dark and heavy with intent. “Then you became my employee. Now, you are my war partner.”

He didn't wait for her answer.

His mouth crashed down onto hers with a fierce, hungry desperation that obliterated every lingering doubt, every corporate secret, and every remaining line of defense.

The kiss wasn't gentle. It was a collision of two people standing on the edge of a precipice, knowing that one wrong move could destroy them both, yet refusing to turn back.

Mila gasped against his lips, her hands rising instinctively to grip the lapels of his suit jacket, pulling him closer as the fire crackled behind them and the world outside burned away to nothing.
