Chapter 10 - The Rebuilding

Six months later, the winter air was biting, but the atmosphere inside Mercer & Associates was electric.
We had just closed the biggest merger in the firm’s history.
Elena popped a bottle of champagne in the boardroom, the cork flying and hitting the ceiling.
“To the unstoppable Natalie Mercer!” Elena cheered, pouring the bubbly into crystal flutes.
The room erupted in applause.
I smiled, taking a glass. “To all of us. Hard work pays off.”
Later that evening, after the office had cleared out, I sat at my desk, looking over the final quarterly reports.
Profits were up thirty percent since Daniel's departure.
My phone rang. It was an unknown number.
I let it go to voicemail, but then played the message out of curiosity.
“Hey, Natalie. It’s Daniel.”
His voice sounded rough, tired.
“I just... I saw the news about the merger in the Journal. Congratulations. You really did it.”
He paused, a heavy sigh crackling through the speaker.
“I’m working at a mid-level accounting firm in Jersey now. It’s... fine. I just wanted to say, you were right. About everything.”
The message ended.
I didn't feel a spike of triumph. I didn't feel vindicated.
I just felt a profound sense of closure.
I deleted the voicemail and blocked the number.
Some chapters are meant to be closed and never reopened.
I grabbed my coat, turned off the office lights, and walked to the elevator.
