Chapter 9 - The Eviction

Friday morning was bright and painfully clear.

Daniel’s movers arrived at 9:00 AM.

I sat on the front porch with a cup of tea, watching them load his boxes into a small rental truck.

There weren't many boxes.

Without the things I had bought him, his life fit into a very small space.

Daniel walked out of the house for the last time, carrying a single duffel bag.

He stopped at the bottom of the porch stairs.

“I signed the final deed transfer for the house,” he said quietly.

“I know.”

“Are you happy now, Natalie? Is this what winning looks like?”

He was still trying to find a way to make me the villain.

“This isn't a game, Daniel. Nobody won. But I survived.”

He looked down at his shoes. The same shoes he had left on the floor next to Chloe’s belt.

“I don't know how to start over,” he admitted, a rare moment of genuine vulnerability.

“That’s not my problem anymore.”

He nodded slowly, accepting the finality of it.

He walked to the rental truck, climbed into the driver’s seat, and started the engine.

As the truck pulled out of the driveway, I didn't cry.

I took a sip of my tea. The neighborhood was quiet.

The scaffolding he had complained about wasn't gone.

I had just removed him from it, realizing he was the heavy, dead weight pulling the structure down.

I stood up, walked back inside my beautiful, silent house, and locked the door.
